Beth Georges found emotional clarity through School of Living Lighter after becoming a 24/7 caregiver for her mother. By applying Heather Aardema’s approach to neutrality and identifying 'saboteurs,' Beth transitioned from feeling disorganized and overwhelmed to experiencing a lighter, less stressful life, even maintaining composure following a recent car accident.

The interview
How has living the 'lighter life' impacted your daily outlook?
It has given me a lot more hope. I'm much happier all the time. I don't let things bother me like they used to and it's more of a lighter kind of like, 'okay, I can deal with that. Next.' Very, very different than, 'oh my gosh, here comes another one. Now what the heck am I going to do?'
What specific permissions have you given yourself through this process?
I feel like I give myself permission to not be perfect all the time. I give myself permission to decluttering my home and all of my mom's things more slowly and to process them to better understand the emotions behind the physical things that I've held on to. Even as much as the emotions that I have held on to when losing my mom.
What was your life like before working with Heather Aardema?
My life got out of whack. I was taking care of my mom and I felt terribly disorganized. Lots of prioritizing on a day to day basis, which was not really working for me. As far as my health is concerned, it's always been an absolute top priority for me but when my mom came to live with me it was no longer a priority. I was taking care of her 24/7 and I lost the ability to put myself up at the top.
Why did you decide to say yes to the School of Living Lighter?
What made me say yes to Heather was the way she came across—her warmth, compassion and ability to set a stage of total trust right off the bat. She just has this beautiful presence and allows you to feel connected with her, engaged by her, and totally supported.
What specific tools or concepts from the coaching were most helpful?
Something that I found to be really helpful was her explanation of the saboteurs. How many that we get to call on on a regular basis and how we can approach getting rid of those saboteurs by kind of reinterpreting my world around me. Feeling more neutral about the challenges and having a conversation with those saboteurs and saying, 'No, you don't get to control me like that anymore,' really helped moving forward.
How did you apply these lessons to a recent difficult situation?
Recently I was involved in a car accident and I got to choose how I imported all that I had to deal with in my life and choose to be neutral about it and see many more silver linings from it than I ever would have had I not been working with Heather.
What would you say to someone considering joining the program?
I would say, don't be on the fence, jump off that fence and go 100% pure in and watch what happens. You will just get a tremendous amount of support from not only Heather but from everyone in the group. It's a phenomenal community. I cannot recommend them enough.
