The interview
What has been the overall impact of Clinician Business Labs on your business?
I think Clinician Business Labs really did a 180-degree pivot for me. It's been immense in terms of my mental outlook, where I want to go with the clinic, and it's just completely changed things.
What was your original goal when you opened your clinic in 2012?
When I opened up my clinic, the big reason why I opened it was I wanted to be able to work in a non-toxic environment, one that was aligned with my personal goals and being able to enjoy work going into the office. I was trying to develop a co-op where we were just working in a very positive environment.
What business challenges were you facing before the program?
I had to do a thorough review of contracts and understanding that the clinic needs to be profitable and how does that need to be managed through contracts. 2025 has been extremely challenging for us through a transition in terms of general revenues, and we saw the potential for burnout at the front desk because we were extremely busy.
How has the community aspect of the program helped you?
Working with the Hive, working with other clinic owners, realizing that a lot of the issues that I was facing is pretty common. It changes the mindset into one of potential and positivity and what are my options, as opposed to being on your own island in despair. That community is pretty big.
What specific technical expertise does the program provide?
They bring in specific experts and technical abilities in certain areas. For example, knowing what is a good contract and what is not a good contract. There's just so many things that come from the program that are just exceptional.
How has your perspective on financing and debt changed?
I'm currently taking a BDC loan out and I've always shied away from it. I've always been one of those people that's like, 'no, I'm gonna do this on my own. I don't wanna accumulate debt.' But it gives me the confidence that this is a bottleneck that needs to be addressed now. Time is money and this is a good move.
What is the level of support like within the organization?
The organization itself, the depth and breadth of support—I didn't think it would be that deep. If there's something that you're having challenges with, there's a better chance that there is some sort of support within the program available for you. The concierge responds within 24 hours, so you're not fumbling around the site.
Frequently asked
Is it worth taking on debt to grow a clinical practice?
Dr. Derek Cook initially shied away from debt, preferring to work alone. However, the program gave him the confidence to realize that time is money and that a BDC loan was a necessary tool to address business bottlenecks and facilitate growth.
How does Clinician Business Labs help with clinic management?
The program provides technical expertise in areas like contract review to ensure profitability. Dr. Cook noted that understanding how to manage contracts helped him transition his team optimally and avoid 'future landmines' in business operations.
What is the community like in the Clinician Business Labs program?
Dr. Cook describes the community, known as 'The Hive,' as a group of clinic owners who share 'hidden gems' of information. It shifts the owner's mindset from being on an 'island in despair' to one of potential and abundance.
