The interview

What draws you to outdoor activities like hiking in Moab?

Moab is a beautiful area, and I'm just really into Red Rock. I like to go, so just the scenery for me, then getting able to hike in it. It was just good to do that to be with other like-minded women.

What were your primary health concerns as you got older?

As I've gotten older, more concerns with bone density and things, even though I've worked out all these years, you can only ignore that, I guess, for so long. So I've never really been into much of the heavy duty weight resistance training. That was one of the reasons I wanted to do it. But also, as you get older, women over 50 have a real tough time controlling body fat.

How does Debra Atkinson's approach differ from other fitness programs?

Deborah is not only into the weight training and from that perspective, but she covers the whole landscape of, you know, diet and how to manage all those things as an older woman. I'm surprised, I guess, and impressed by how much she really is so dedicated to this for women, and just trying to continually improve all facets of taking care of yourself. She's just - she's all in.

What is your experience with the weight resistance training sessions?

I'm definitely more into the weight resistance training and I actually like it. And I just think she makes it fun and she's always giving you hints as I'm doing it. There's nobody else to check if my form is proper. And so she's always giving hints what form you should be in for the different weight resistance things.

What activities did you participate in during the retreat?

The hiking part was really good, and then we did some other things like stand up paddle boarding, which was fun except for the headwind, horseback riding and then having some workout sessions with her. So she fit a lot in and then talking again about diet and things to eat, not eat, and just some one-on-one time with her for the five of us to talk about what our concerns were.

How has the community of women impacted your journey?

She definitely encouraged us. There's something called WhatsApp that we were communicating some online before we had a chance to really meet and get to know each other and we can still do that. We were able to share pictures, and encourage one another and you know we're still doing that. I think it is really a good idea to do that and encourage cause, you know, life throws you different things at different times, and having other women that you can relate to.

How do you feel about your fitness future at age 70?

I think it just encourages me to continue on. I just turned 70 and I'm still doing all this and I'm thankful that I can. To continue to do what I'm doing and have the encouragement to do it. And I think with weight training and the other things that Deborah adds in there, I think my outlook is good that I'm going to continue doing this for a long time.
