The interview

What was your health situation before finding Urban Monk?

I'm retired and was a flight attendant for thirty-five years. I've been having serious burning in my stomach on and off for years. It keeps me awake at night and restricts what I could eat; sometimes I couldn't even have a glass of wine or anything acidic.

What made you decide to try their services?

I'd been getting his emails for a while, and then suddenly one day I read about this microbiome testing, and it was a very reasonable price. So I decided to just go ahead and see what it showed me.

What were the results of the microbiome testing?

The three things that I was the most sensitive to were the three things I was eating the most. I've gone off of those, and I'm already feeling better.

How would you describe the retreat experience in Austin?

I hardly have words for it. It's so peaceful and beautiful, right in the heart of Austin, near the river. The room we were in for Qigong practice was dark and lovely. We had a delicious vegetarian restaurant practically outside the door. I had one of the best weekends I've ever had at a retreat.

What was your impression of Dr. Pedram Shojai?

He's brilliant, fierce, strong, and disciplined, but the kindness part is what surprises you. He took time between breaks to answer every question in the room. He would just answer them before I could even ask. To be in person with someone with his commitment level was inspiring.

Did you work with anyone else on the team?

His wife, Dr. Almira Shojai, was there too the whole time, and I love her. I've been working with her because I have a microbiome problem in my mouth too.

Did the Qigong practice have a physical impact on you?

I was very pleased with how the Qigong feels in your body. I've had a very bad pain in this shoulder, and the stretching and the movements that we did seem to have lessened the pain. It was kind of miraculous.

What is your main takeaway from the experience?

I'm a different person having spent that weekend with him. If I commit to this practice every day, I know that it will settle my nervous system and some of the things that I've been struggling with my entire life.

I really was surprised at the level of generosity with his time and his wisdom. The questions were just flowing constantly, and he would just give us as much time as we needed. I would do it again in a second. Hi, my name is Cathy Huff. I live in Northern Kentucky, just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, and I'm retired. I was a flight attendant for thirty-five years. I've been having serious burning in my stomach on and off for years. It will heal and feel fine for a couple of months, and then all of a sudden it starts burning again. Keeps me awake at night and restricts what I could... You know, if I could, couldn't even sometimes have a glass of wine or anything acidic. I'd been getting his emails for a while, and then suddenly one day I read about this microbiome testing, and it was reasonable. Very reasonable price. So I decided to just go ahead and see what it showed me. The three things that I was the most sensitive to were the three things I was eating the most. Gone off of those, and I'm already feeling better. That's why I'm in the program. I hardly have words for it. It's so peaceful and beautiful, right in the heart of Austin, right on the river, near the river. And the room that we were in all weekend doing our Qigong practice was dark and lovely. We had a delicious restaurant, a vegetarian restaurant right out, practically outside the door. Little coffee shops. I just... I had one of the best weekends I've ever had at a retreat. He's brilliant. He's fierce. He's strong. He's disciplined. He's kind. The kindness part is kind of what surprises you because he has all those qualities of being, you know, so f- so strong and powerful, and he's so disciplined in his practice. Dr. Shojai took time between... We had breaks c- throughout the day, sitting on our cushions, and he would answer every question in the room. He would just answer them before I could even ask. The most profound is his life story and how disciplined he was for those ten years that he was traveling and practicing with the Dalai Lama and with other masters, Qigong masters throughout the world, and that he is-- how much he uses it in his business and teaching it. And also for his wife, Almira Shojai, Dr. Shojai, she was there too the whole time, and I love her. I've been working with her because I have a microbiome problem in my mouth too. I was very pleased with how the Qigong feels in your body as you're doing it. And then he would tell us to, like, feel the flow. Feel the flow through your body. And I thought that was kind of miraculous. I've had a very bad pain here in this shoulder. The stretching and the movements that we did seem to have lessened the pain. I'm a different person having spent that weekend with him. I don't know if I've ever met anyone quite like him. To be in person with someone like Dr. Shojai, with his commitment level, he was inspiring. I was very inspired by him. If I commit to this practice every day, I know that it will settle my nervous system and some of the things that I've been struggling with my entire life. I know it will. I just have to be disciplined and do it every day. If you're thinking about attending the Urban Monk retreat, don't give it a second thought. Just being in the presence of the two Dr. Shojais and his discipline and the routines that he teaches and the amount of time that he will take to answer every question you can imagine asking is well worth
