The interview

What was the biggest surprise you had after returning to Vector?

The biggest surprise that I had was how much of an impact leaving Cutco had on my return. I came back with a lot of gratitude just being a part of the culture of Vector and the culture of Cutco. I was able to just fine-tune my skills, and maturity-wise, the growth that I had allowed me to come back stronger and more determined than ever before.

Can you introduce yourself and your history with the company?

My name is Brandon Brown. I'm from Hermosa Beach, California. Over the years of selling Cutco—it's been about 18 years—I've sold about just shy of $10 million in Cutco products, and have had a great experience over that time.

What does your current business look like within the company?

I have a few different layers. The first one is federal; I work with the federal program where we go to military bases to sell Cutco domestically and internationally. I'm one of the coordinators focusing on the Asia Pacific region, going to Hawaii, Guam, and Japan. I also work in events like trade shows and focus on service events offering free sharpening and repairs.

How did you get started and what was your early experience like?

I started selling Cutco in 2007 when I was 18 years old. I sold Cutco while I was in college for about 5 years. I graduated debt-free, and that was an amazing experience.

Why did you leave and eventually return to Vector Marketing?

After I graduated with my degree in finance, I thought there might be other opportunities that are better and felt I had maximized my time. I left for a couple years and dabbled with other sales organizations, but inevitably came back because the culture within Cutco was unparalleled. It's a community of people that really care, are supportive, and willing to share insights.

What competitive advantage did the experience give you?

I think my learning curve in the real world was compounded being a part of Cutco and Vector in my early years. Learning time management skills, learning sales skills, learning how to handle challenges and adversity. I feel that my time in my early years gave me a competitive advantage when I left before I came back.

What advice would you give to someone considering this opportunity?

I would invite that person to ask if they really gave the opportunity a fair chance and played it out 100%. Whatever was an opportunity 5 or 10 years ago is drastically different now in the best way possible. We're a company full of people constantly challenging the status quo and wanting to improve.
