The interview
What was life like before you found Arbor Health?
Our daughter was sick, and we didn't know why. She started feeling yucky all the time, then developed sensory issues, food and eating issues, and even extreme OCD and anxiety. She was constantly in a state of fight or flight. It was so severe that we were unable to function normally as a family; she couldn't go to preschool and even going to the store was a struggle.
What was your experience with other doctors and specialists?
We saw physical therapists for sensory issues, a speech and language pathologist for eating issues, and a therapist for potty training issues, but none of it helped. We didn't realize yet that it wasn't a behavior issue, but immune system and brain inflammation causing her symptoms. Our pediatrician eventually suggested PANS and PANDAS and told us to seek additional help.
What made you decide to choose Arbor Health?
While researching PANS and PANDAS, I came across a Facebook video posted by the founders of Arbor Health. They were talking about the condition with such detail that I knew they 'got it.' I knew they understood what we were going through and were going to help us before we even had our first appointment.
Were there any hesitations about getting started?
The one thing that might have made me hesitant was the cost. I knew it was more than typical medical appointments, but after those first two appointments, it was absolutely clear that this is what our daughter needed. They actually had a plan to help us figure out how to help her get better.
How did the Arbor Health team support you during the treatment process?
We felt incredibly supported. I remember meeting with our health coach on the phone when we were really struggling with our daughter's OCD and anxiety. She provided the positive encouragement and reinforcement we needed. She had so much experience with other parents that she said exactly what I needed to hear at that time.
Was there anything that surprised you about their diagnostic approach?
I knew they specialized in PANS and PANDAS and would test for bacteria and viruses, but what surprised me was that they included testing for toxic mold. That was a game-changer for us because that was a huge part of our daughter's illness. We remediated our house and were able to heal.
What is the best part of your experience and how has life changed?
The best part is that our daughter is better. She is now a completely normal and functioning kid who loves to go to school with her friends. We aren't just trying to survive day-to-day anymore; we can leave the house, take trips, and go to the store as a family. She can play soccer and do all the normal things a typical kid should do.
Frequently asked
Is Arbor Health worth the cost for PANS/PANDAS treatment?
Shari Gerevics admitted that the cost was her primary hesitation as it was higher than typical medical appointments. However, she stated that after the first two appointments, it was absolutely clear the investment was necessary because the team provided a concrete plan to help her daughter get better.
How does Arbor Health support parents during the healing process?
Shari highlighted the role of their health coach, who provided positive encouragement and reinforcement during difficult moments of OCD and anxiety. The coach's experience with other parents allowed her to say exactly what Shari needed to hear to stay focused on the long-term healing journey.
What kind of testing does Arbor Health perform for chronic pediatric issues?
Beyond testing for bacteria and viruses associated with PANS/PANDAS, Arbor Health includes testing for toxic mold. Shari noted this was a 'game-changer' that allowed her family to remediate their home and finally provide an environment where her daughter could heal.
