The interview
What is the culture like at Atlas Assistants?
Atlas is not just where you get a job and then it does abandon you to go sort things yourself. It's a community that builds. I don't see Atlas as a workplace because whenever we're having meetings, everyone just talks and there's always someone who wants to help you with anything. Atlas provides the resource, mentorship, and training to do that.
Can you introduce yourself and your current role?
My name is Michael Mbama, and I am currently based in Lagos, Nigeria. I currently work for Atlas, and I am paired with a chief marketing officer—someone who's been in the industry for over 30 years.
What was your professional background before joining Atlas?
Before I bumped into Atlas, I was actually working in the e-commerce industry for about 5 years. At some point, I just felt like I needed change and something more engaging and challenging. I realized that working as an executive assistant comes with experience working for different CEOs and executives across different industries.
What was the onboarding and training process like?
Before I started working with my executive, I went through a 4-week training with Atlas. That covered calendar management, inbox, zero inbox, triaging, bookings, hotel bookings, flights, and all of that. They also taught us how to be resourceful, not always waiting for your exec to tell you things to do, and how to bring up initiatives.
How did the training impact your relationship with your executive?
That training was something that solidified my experience with her and also improved my workflow. There was a little bit of pressure coming on board because she had to let a previous E.A. go, and you don't want to make any mistake. The training helped me leave a very good first impression.
How has your presence changed the daily life of the executive you support?
I have been handling a lot of different tasks, and by doing that, I see that it brings that change to my exec, where she has a lot of time to do different stuff. When I wanted to take time off, she said, 'I'm going to miss having you working,' which made me realize how important I have been to her.
What would you say to someone considering joining Atlas?
If you're looking for a place to grow yourself as an executive assistant, if you're looking for support and experience, Atlas is the right place to come to. You're going to get the best training, the best support, and the best onboarding where they walk you step by step every single week.
