The interview
What was the situation like before you found Belen Optimum Health?
We had bad, bad, bad time with my daughter. We got a diagnostic, and they said that she has autism, and that was it. I didn't know what to do. The drama was getting worse; it was like tantrums all day long, just never stopped. I would be crying on the stairs at nighttime when she slept.
How did you find out about Belen and what were your initial thoughts?
I googled a lot of people online because we weren't getting help off the HSE. She was recommended to me by a play therapist. We were hesitated at first to go because we were like, 'Is there help out there? Is it gonna happen? Is it more money?' We never really saw an outcome of what we were trying to achieve before.
What was your first impression when you met Belen?
The minute we went and met her first, we felt the positivity from her, the welcoming. When we walked through that door, I felt that I didn't have to say sorry. I didn't have to apologize to what way my child was gonna behave. I felt home from home when I met her, and she related so well to my daughter.
What specific changes did you notice in your daughter's behavior?
We spend our time in supermarkets, no outbursts. We go shopping. There's no flapping around with her hands anymore, and I feel positive now to bring her out. My daughter would sit with her, and she had conversation with her. I was like, 'What's going on here?'
What did you learn about the connection between nutrition and your daughter's health?
I didn't even know it was all about the gut. I thought I was giving my child all the benefits of food—she was eating healthy foods—but it was wrong. What she has shown me and what could actually change in our lives has shocked me completely, especially since I work as a pharmacist technician.
What tools or routines did Belen provide for you to use at home?
She gave me a food plan and she'd send videos of what way to relax the child. We do it every night. It's like a yoga routine that she has given us, and my daughter loves it.
How has this transformation impacted your personal life?
It was a big step for us. We've had a tremendous change in our lives. I went back to work, which I was not expecting, and she has changed that for me. She has brought just tremendous life and happiness back into the home.
Frequently asked
Is natural therapy for autism worth the investment?
Sabrina O'Brien initially hesitated, wondering if there would be a real outcome or if it was just 'more money.' However, she concluded it was the 'best journey' she ever took because it completely changed her daughter's behavior and allowed Sabrina to return to work.
Can changing a child's diet help with autism symptoms?
Yes, Sabrina discovered that despite feeding her daughter what she thought was healthy food, the specific gut-focused plan from Belen Optimum Health was the missing link. The change in diet led to a 'tremendous change' in the home, reducing daily drama and tantrums.
What is the environment like at Belen Optimum Health for children with behavioral issues?
Sabrina described the atmosphere as 'home from home' and welcoming. She noted that she felt she didn't have to apologize for her child's behavior and was shocked at how at ease and conversational her daughter became during the sessions.
