The interview
Can you introduce yourself and your professional background?
My name is Ian Harrison. I'm the managing director of Harrison Surveying Limited. I'm a Consultant Project Manager and Quantity Surveyor operating in the Caribbean, primarily on the island of St Lucia. I do high-end residential properties, five million up to 80 million, and I do hotel developments.
What led you to look into Endureed as a roofing solution?
I was on a project called Sugar Beach Hotel, which is very high-end property. The owner at the time insisted on natural products like natural reeds, natural roofing, and it was an absolute nightmare maintenance-wise. So at the time we were pushing for a synthetic product, and Endureed came up as one of the likely products.
What were your initial concerns regarding the product?
The #1 reason that I was a bit concerned about going with Endureed initially was the cost. Obviously it's a synthetic product. It's an upfront capital expenditure. But having done the number-crunching, and looking at the anticipated lifespan of the natural products compared to Endureed, it made sense. Over a 10-year period, the Endureed product proved to be cost viable as well.
How did you verify the product's performance before committing?
Fortunately for us, we knew the owners of Sugar Beach Hotel who had recently installed a large quantity of Endureed products of various types. So we got to confirm what Endureed was saying about the delivery times, the time it took to install, and the maintenance of that material - which is zero after it's installed.
What has been your experience with the product since installation?
With that knowledge we're quite confident going forward, and we've now had it in place for 2 to 3 years and we've not touched it since we put it up.
How would you describe the service and ordering process with Endureed?
One of the good things about Endureed when I started working with them was their ability to quantify quite quickly off drawings without any work from me. I would send them AutoCAD drawings, they would quite quickly come back with the quantities, each part in numbers, so I knew exactly what I was getting. Plus, quick turnaround on cost. And then once order was placed, is actually a process where you knew what was happening, knew when it was leaving the factory, knew when it was getting to the port.
What would you say to someone considering Endureed for their project?
If someone's sitting on the fence and unsure about whether to go with them or not, I can assure you that the product does what it says it does. I've had no issues with it. Yes, it's pricey, but as I said, if you do the numbers and look at the maintenance going forward and the longevity of the product, you'll find that it's actually worth doing.
Frequently asked
Is Endureed synthetic thatch worth the high upfront cost?
Ian Harrison noted that while the product is pricey as an upfront capital expenditure, his 'number-crunching' proved it is cost-viable over a 10-year period due to the short lifespan and high maintenance costs of natural products.
Does synthetic thatch look realistic enough for luxury properties?
According to Harrison, the product looks better than the photographs and is indistinguishable from natural thatch when installed out of reach, meeting the aesthetic demands of high-end clients.
How difficult is the ordering and quantification process for Endureed?
Harrison found the process seamless, noting that Endureed quantified the project quickly from AutoCAD drawings and provided a transparent tracking process from the factory to the port.
