The interview

How has working with Gapin Institute changed your perspective on health?

Working with Gapin Institute has been really good for me because they have helped me think about my health in a different way. I think about it more in terms of what can I do now that can help me be healthier 10, 20, 30 years from now? Even though I'm 56, there's still a lot of things that I want to do in life, and I feel like I'm on a path now to where I can achieve a lot of those things.

What was your experience with the traditional medical system before Gapin?

From a medical standpoint, working with the medical system that's not Gapin was largely frustrating. It was very reactive as opposed to taking a proactive approach like the people at Gapin do.

What drew you to the Gapin Institute specifically?

I'm a big fan of Dr. Peter Attia and his podcast. After listening to him and seeing that there was a different approach to medicine where the practitioners could be proactive and it could be more personalized, that's what drew me to the Gapin Institute because they take the same approach.

Did you have any hesitations about starting the program?

When I was considering working with Gapin, one hesitation was that they're located in Sarasota, Florida and I'm located in Montgomery, Alabama. But once I did an in-person visit to the clinic in Sarasota, then we could work virtually and that has been a great experience since then.

How does their systematic approach differ from your past experiences?

In the past I've tried the more traditional medical approach where you have a problem, you go see the doctor, they address that problem. Whereas now I feel like we're taking a more holistic, systematic approach to things.

What has been the most surprising part of the experience?

The thing that surprised me the most about working with the Gapin Institute is just how responsive they are to any request that I have. They have built a really nice infrastructure. Whether it's things like refills that you need or labs that you need to get ordered or changes to anything that you're doing, they have someone who can respond to you in a very timely manner.

How would you summarize the impact on your life?

My life is different now that I'm working with the Gapin Institute, really, because we're looking at the big picture and not just focusing on individual conditions or individual things that are wrong, but really trying to address things from a systematic standpoint, has been extremely helpful.
