The interview
What surprised you most about working at Geobear?
What surprised me is that I can actually work a job where we're not really selling anything. We're actually helping people do what is best for their company or their house and that's not always the case. Usually, even when that is the case, you're often more expensive or there's other issues so to be faster, friendlier, cost effective and deliver—it's one thing to say it when you're going to start a job but another thing to perform it. Here we're able to perform it.
Who are you and what is your role at the company?
My name is Dante Miller. I'm the director of operations for Geobear USA. I'm in Yorba Linda, California. My position as director of operations is to help manage the branch, the sales team and the production team to make sure that we meet sales goals and finish our jobs on time.
How did you come to join Geobear and why have you stayed?
I answered an ad that asked for salespeople and after the interview thought it would be a great opportunity to grow with the company. For me personally, I've been in construction over 20 years and the hardest thing is telling a client you're going to deliver and not being able to. And Geobear has been the only company I've been able to work with where I tell a client we're going to do something and then we do what we say we're going to do. Integrity-wise, I feel like it meets my values the most.
What can clients expect when working with you personally?
They're going to get the truth, whether it's good or bad and we are going to deal with problems head-on and there won't be any surprises or changes and great communication and customer service. We try to be friendly, fast, energetic and helpful no matter what.
Can you describe a recent project success?
A local warehouse had a plumbing leak that had broken underneath the floor, pushed in about 200,000 gallons of water and they needed some emergency services to stabilize the foundation and fill the voids so they could do further construction. We were able to move our schedule around and get out there within a few days. Within 24 hours after we were there they were able to run heavy equipment over the floors that we stabilized.
What advice do you have for property owners to prevent foundation issues?
The biggest thing that people don't understand when they have an issue is that moisture is normally the cause and in many cases it's man-made cause. If you could find a way to make sure your gutters are not pointing at your house, usually spread at least three to five feet away. If the land is sloped away quit running your sprinklers every day and too much. That would all help and save a lot of homes.
How does your background in ballroom dancing influence your work?
I used to teach competitive ballroom dancing for 16 years so the reason that kind of helps is the coaching and ability to work with my clients when they, maybe, don't understand something from engineering. It's much easier because I'm used to being patient and I'm also used to leading and sometimes even following, depending on who wants to take control so we can actually have a good partnership. It is a 'customer service tango,' if you want to call it that.
What is the internal culture like at Geobear?
For us, the teamwork is really strong. It appears that there's more of a focus on learning, understanding and long term stability and growth. It's not a high pressure organization. We believe in taking responsibility for what doesn't work out but then growing from that, so it feels like a very strong value company.
