The interview
Who are you and what does your business do?
I'm Darlene Walker. I'm a human resource consultant. I'm the owner and founder of N. Darlene Walker and Associates. We, in the past, have done mostly work in the area of affirmative action and equal employment. We do people analytics. We're based in Houston, Texas.
What challenges were you facing before partnering with Insperity?
Benefits and payroll administration was taking a lot of my time. I had a friend who'd been a vice president for one of the major corporations here, and he said, 'You know, there's this new kind of organization. You could outsource some of this and create the kind of culture that you're looking to create.'
What was your first impression of Insperity?
Paul Sarvadi himself came out and talked with us at that time. They had me at the tagline. The tagline at that point was, 'We take care of your people so you can take care of your business,' and for me, that's what it boiled down to.
What specific services were you looking for?
I wanted somebody to take care of my employees, good benefits, good health insurance, 401[k], retirement as- and help with HR kinds of things that freed me up to do business. It was my first call, not my last one, but it then ended up being my first choice.
How has Insperity helped you compete with larger companies?
We work with a lot of very large companies, a lot of the Fortune 500 companies. I wanted the kind of environment that they had, and that starts with the kind of benefits, the kind of retirement, health, everything that a big company can offer. I couldn't do that as a small business owner without the help of Insperity.
What impact has this had on your staff and culture?
I wanted that very professional culture and to be able to hire the best people, high-level professionals, and to be able to retain them, and of course, being able to have the support of the HR staff at Insperity when we need to develop policies, procedures, and developing our corporate culture.
What do you value most about the ongoing relationship?
Insperity really listened. Continuity is really important to me. As a small businessperson, when I call up and need some help, it really helps if the person at the other end of the phone knows who we are.
