The interview

Can you introduce yourself and your experience with the providers?

Hi, my name is Katie Herb and I live in Terre Haute, Indiana, and I am a stay-at-home mom. I have never experienced a provider, both in my own life and now in my children's lives, as invested in my children as all of the providers at Integrative Health. When you become a patient at the clinic, they are investing a lot into helping your child to get better, but it's more than that. It is a much deeper immersion than what you get through other types of healthcare.

What was your son's health like before joining the program?

We joined the Eczema Transformation Program back in 2023. Prior to that, my son was just very, very sick. He came out of the womb sick, I like to say. He had rashes from the start, and that quickly turned to food allergies when he was three months old, which we found through blood in his stool, and it just escalated from there.

What was your experience with conventional medical treatments?

We saw a lot of conventional doctors and continued to be handed a prognosis of, 'Oh, this is just going to be his life. Next he'll have allergies, then he'll have asthma.' And we were also handed a lot of steroids. And it just got to the point where he was miserable. He wasn't sleeping.

Did you have any hesitations about the cost of the program?

My husband and I were both very hesitant about the cost. We were in the military so we had Tricare, so the thought of having to pay a couple thousand dollars out of pocket for this program was absurd to us. But our son was so sick, and we were miserable. We had another baby on the way, and we were to the point that we had done everything that they said to do, and he wasn't getting any better; in fact, he was getting worse.

How is your son doing now after working with Dr. Temple and the clinic?

Bowen's doing phenomenal. Today, actually, we are getting him off of his last prescription, which is just like amazing to say! He can play outside in shorts and a t-shirt. He's sleeping at night. He's eating a lot of new foods. There's still some allergies that we're working through, through low dose allergen therapy with them, but it's night and day compared to what it was when we joined the program and the clinic.

What should other parents know about the Integrative Health Carolinas approach?

I think it's important for parents to understand that eczema is a sign of inflammation. And the team at Integrative Health Carolinas, they view it as that. They're not just treating it as this one thing that we need to figure out and move on from, but they're treating it as the whole picture of your child's health to set your child up for success for a healthy childhood, and hopefully a healthy adulthood and future.

Frequently asked

Is the Eczema Transformation Program worth the out-of-pocket cost?

Katie Herb initially found the multi-thousand dollar out-of-pocket cost 'absurd' compared to her military Tricare coverage. However, after seeing her son's results, she stated they would 'pay it a million times over' to do it again.

Can functional medicine help a child with severe food allergies?

Yes, Katie Herb's son utilized low dose allergen therapy through the clinic to work through his allergies. He is now eating many new foods and has seen a 'night and day' improvement in his immune responses.

What is the Integrative Health Carolinas approach to eczema?

According to Katie Herb, the team views eczema as a sign of internal inflammation rather than an isolated skin issue. They treat the 'whole picture' of the child's health to set them up for long-term success rather than just applying a 'band-aid' solution.

So he's doing amazing. I think it's important for parents to understand that eczema is a sign of inflammation. And the team at Integrative Health Carolinas, they view it as that. And so they see these children who have eczema or food allergies or different - all kinds of different immune responses to things. And they're not just treating it as this one thing that we need to figure out and move on from, but they're treating it as the whole picture of your child's health. And so, I think if you as the parent, are wanting to look at the whole picture and to set your child up for success for a healthy childhood, and hopefully a healthy adulthood and future, I think Integrative Health is the place to be because they want them to have a good future and it's not just a band-aid to get you through what you're dealing with without that.
