Carlynn Barefoot, a nurse of 20 years, turned to Integrative Health Carolinas when traditional pediatric care dismissed her concerns. By shifting to Dr. Ana-Maria Temple’s holistic model, her daughter went from "surviving to thriving." The interview

What was your experience with your previous healthcare provider?

My daughter had some health issues that we just weren't getting many answers at our regular pediatrician's office. I felt like we were being dismissed; my concerns were being dismissed. I just wasn't being heard. It wasn't for lack of care but maybe lack of time.

What made you choose Integrative Health Carolinas?

I started looking for something different and somehow came across Integrative Health Carolinas and just knew from the first phone call that it was a match. Especially having been a nurse for almost 20 years, I was used to the traditional insurance-based model with 15-minute appointments at most, but I knew it wasn't working.

How did you handle the transition to a non-traditional medical model?

The cost was definitely a factor, but I told my husband I'll do anything to help my daughter feel better and what we're doing is not working so let's give it a try. Dr. Temple was just so good about discussing the value of it. We are five or six years into this journey with her and I wouldn't have it any other way.

How has Dr. Temple's approach impacted your family?

Dr. Temple and her team just educated us on different choices that we could make—different food choices, lifestyle—and just encouraged our whole family to get healthy. I have seen the benefit of it, not just in my daughter's journey. She went from 'surviving to thriving' with Dr. Temple.

What is the most refreshing part of working with this practice?

One of my favorite things that Dr. Temple says is, 'you know your child best.' It's so refreshing because I think we don't feel that way sometimes. There's just so much noise around it that it feels good to hear your pediatrician say that and then listen to your concerns.

Would you recommend Integrative Health Carolinas to others?

I have recommended IHC to just about everyone I know. The entire team has improved my family's overall health and guided us step by step. They were not hesitant to say that it would be a long journey but it would be one worth taking. We stuck to it, and it has paid off a hundred times fold.

Frequently asked

Is the cost of Integrative Health Carolinas worth it?

Carlynn Barefoot acknowledged that cost was a factor, but after discussing the value with Dr. Temple, she decided to try it because traditional models weren't working. She now states the investment has 'paid off a hundred times fold' over their six-year journey.

How does IHC differ from a traditional insurance-based pediatric model?

As a nurse, Carlynn Barefoot was used to 15-minute appointments and 'cookbook medicine' that felt dismissive. At IHC, she found a team that listens to parental concerns, values the mother's intuition, and provides step-by-step guidance through a long-term wellness journey.
