Bethany Jessop reports that the Kidney Institute helped her daughter, Stella, increase her kidney function (GFR) from 18% to 32% in just four months. By addressing root causes like gut health and diet, they moved Stella from critical Stage 4 chronic kidney disease to Stage 3, successfully avoiding a looming kidney transplant.

The interview
What was the situation before you started working with the Kidney Institute?
Before working with the Kidney Institute, we tried several different methods for my daughter, Stella Jessop. She was out of the hospital for about 2 years. She had a critical stage 4 chronic kidney disease. Her GFR was 18% and she was on the brim of needing a kidney transplant. I had worked with several different doctors and all of them told me just keep waiting for a kidney transplant.
Why did you choose the Kidney Institute?
I had done a lot of research and I had found that the Kidney Institute experience backed what they were doing on a day to day. They have worked at the Kidney of Excellence centers in the United States, and the services that they offered, I felt like really aligned with what I wanted for our family.
When did you first realize the program was making a positive impact?
The moment I realized that the Kidney Institute was making a positive impact on our daughter, Stella, was really in her insulin regimen, so her blood sugar regimen, her diet regimen, and her gut. She was able to have a lot healthier stools, and blood work backed what I was seeing on the day to day. The blood work was a validation that what we were doing was working to the root.
What specific clinical results have you seen since starting the program?
Her GFR, which is how her kidneys function, were at 18% when we started working with the Kidney Institute. The other doctors wanted to transplant at 15. And since August—so August to December—we have been able to increase her kidney function to 32 currently. So we have been able to get her out of the critical stage 4 chronic kidney disease and we are now in stage 3.
How has the experience with their online care been?
What surprised us the most about the online care was how responsive the team has been. We are in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and we see a team in Houston, Texas. Being an online program, I can say that they have been more responsive and more caring than any local doctor that we have been to. They have been very quick to respond, very quick to send over the blood work and things that we need.
How has this changed your family's life overall?
It has changed our family. She has more energy. She is sleeping better. Her blood sugar has been more in range than it has been in the first time in 3 years. Her gut has been in a better place. She is just overall growing and truly thriving for the first time in 3 years. It has been a really long, traumatic, frustrating journey to get here, but we're just thankful for the Kidney Institute for pouring into our life.

Can Stage 4 chronic kidney disease be improved without a transplant?
According to Bethany Jessop, her daughter Stella was at an 18% GFR and facing a transplant at 15%, but through the Kidney Institute's program, she improved to a 32% GFR and moved to Stage 3.
What does the Kidney Institute look at besides kidney function?
Bethany Jessop notes that the team tackles overall health, including gut health, blood sugar, and emotional, physical, and mental well-being, rather than just focusing on the kidneys.
