The interview

What is Prep Dish and who is it for?

Prep Dish is a tool for people who care about the ingredients they feed their body. It's for people who realize that the energy they get makes them more productive and happier. It allows you to know what you're having for dinner a week in advance with enough to invite company over.

How did you first hear about the service and what was your previous experience?

I heard about it on a podcast. My husband and I live in a loft in Atlanta and we have gone through lots of different iterations of having a personal chef and other kinds of meal prep. As soon as I heard about Prep Dish, I was willing to try it.

What are the top three benefits you have experienced?

The first one is that we don't waste food; we use everything up, like a whole bunch of parsley instead of leaving half to get ugly. The second benefit is the food tastes really good. The third benefit is we're eating more healthily than we would if we just ran out for a snack or a pizza.

How did you know Prep Dish was the right fit for your lifestyle?

I knew it was right when I actually used it every week. A lot of times I buy things because they sound good, but practically they don't fit my time frame. I thought I was buying time, but what I really got was good food that fit my schedule.

Can you describe the weekly process and the menu options?

Every Friday, you get an email with a link to four different menus: low carb, paleo, and 'super fast.' The super fast option means the entire prep for the whole week takes less than an hour. The printout includes an organized grocery list and a step-by-step prep guide.

What is the cooking and prep process like for you and your husband?

George and I usually do it together—cleaning vegetables, using the food processor, and putting everything together. By the time you're done prepping, the refrigerator is full of beautiful containers. When we get in from work at night, it's just minutes until dinner is ready.

Frequently asked

Will Prep Dish actually save me time if I have a busy schedule?

Wendy found that while she initially thought she was just buying time, the structured system allowed her to complete a full week of prep in under an hour. This resulted in dinner being ready in just minutes when she returns home from work.

Does Prep Dish help with grocery shopping efficiency?

Yes, Wendy notes that the grocery list is organized by store section (produce, dairy, meat), allowing her to 'zip through' the store quickly. She even mentioned the list is so clear a 15-year-old could handle the shopping.

How does Prep Dish handle food waste?

Wendy reported that they no longer throw food away because the recipes are designed to use full portions of ingredients. For example, if a recipe calls for parsley, it utilizes the whole bunch so nothing dries out in the refrigerator.

Full transcript

Prep Dish is a tool for people who care about the ingredients they feed their body, people who care about their shampoo or their shoes realize that the energy that they get makes them more productive, happier, more fun to be around. Prep Dish is like that for food. So, instead of worrying about what I'm going to have for dinner I know what I'm going to have for dinner week in advance and there's enough to invite company over. My name is Wendy Kinney. My husband and I live in a loft in Atlanta, Georgia I heard about it on a podcast and we have gone through lots of different iterations of having a personal chef, having other kinds of meal prep and as soon as I heard about it I was willing to try it. So, I have three number one benefits. The first one is that we don't waste food. George says that where we used to throw food away, we don't anymore because we use it up. What I like is if it calls for parsley, I use the whole bunch of parsley. There's not even a half a bunch of parsley left in the refrigerator to dry out and get ugly. The second benefit is the food tastes really good and then the third benefit is we're eating more healthily than we would if we just ran out for a snack or a pizza. I knew Prep Dish was right for me when I used it because a lot of times I buy things because they sound good but practically they don't fit my time frame. But when I started using Prep Dish every week I knew that it was a fit for me. The thing I thought I was buying was time but what I really got was good food. What I like about Prep Dish the most is the ingredients are all together, I go and shop quickly. Every Friday, you get an email with a link to four different menus. One is low carb, one is paleo, one of them is super fast, which means that the entire prep for the entire week is gonna take less than an hour. When you print that out, it's three pages. The first page is the grocery list and it's in order so first there's the stuff from produce, then there's the stuff from dairy, then there's the things you need to get from meat. It's all right there. You just go zipping through the grocery store. If you had a 15 year old you could hand them this and they could do the grocery shopping for you. The second page is the prep to do in order. So first you chop the onions, then you saute the onions, then you put them with these other things and put them in the oven. By the time you're done prepping, your refrigerator is full of these beautiful containers ready to combine into meals every night of the week, so who wouldn't try that? The process for cooking is just wonderful. George and I usually do it together. Were cleaning the vegetables, running them through the food processor, putting everything together. It's just a really good process and then when we get in from work at night, we own our own business, we work a lot. It's just minutes until dinner is ready, it's magical.
