The interview
Who are you and where are you located?
Hi, my name is Brandon Doza. I am a loan officer with MPA Home Loans. I live in Denver, Colorado.
What was your professional background before joining MPA Home Loans?
Before I joined MPA Home Loans, I was a retail loan officer with Fairway Independent Mortgage. We were looking for a change, you know, we were looking for more opportunity, more products.
Why did you choose MPA Home Loans over other brokerages?
We settled on MPA Home Loans because they had a lot of the really good things that we liked about the retail side, like all the support, the dedicated processing. But they had access to way more products, better rates. There's a lot of brokerages out there that promise higher comps, but there's no support system. MPA is an awesome hybrid model of that.
How has the transition to the brokerage side affected your ability to close deals?
I do a lot of business in the mountains, and there's a lot of tricky loans up there for different condos. I was just tired of saying 'no.' Since coming to MPA, it's just been a world of 'yes.' I've been able to do all the tricky deals and stuff in the mountains, which has been just amazing.
What is the culture and leadership like at MPA?
Everybody at MPA is super friendly, super helpful. It's very tight knit. It is a smaller brokerage, but it has the support systems, and the feel of a big brokerage. The leadership at MPA is great. You know, all the branch managers, Michael, the CEO. You know, they're all there to jump in and help when you have questions. We have a big Slack channel that, you know, if you have a question, they answer.
How has being at MPA impacted your business and realtor relationships?
Being here has impacted my business as a loan officer by enabling me to do more across the board. I had to turn down a lot of business when certain condominiums came up or certain properties that we just couldn't do on the retail side. I've been able to take those on now, which has led me to have more outreach with realtors up there.
What would you say to other loan officers considering the move to MPA?
I would recommend MPA to other loan officers because it's opened up a world of opportunity for me, and I know it will for you too. Don't listen to the hype that the brokerage side has to be scary. They have all the systems in place to make it easy for you to switch, and you're going to be amazed at how much opportunity you have.
Frequently asked
Is the mortgage brokerage side slower than retail lending?
Brandon Doza found this to be a common misconception. He noted that since joining MPA Home Loans, the process has been 'faster than I realized' and that the idea of the brokerage side moving slower 'couldn't be farther from the truth.'
Do mortgage brokerages lack the support systems of retail lenders?
Brandon chose MPA specifically because they offer a hybrid model. He confirmed they provide the same dedicated processing and support systems found on the retail side, but with the added benefit of shopping 40+ different lenders.
Can MPA Home Loans handle complex condominium or mountain property loans?
Yes. Brandon Doza reported that while he previously had to say 'no' to tricky mountain deals at a retail lender, MPA has enabled a 'world of yes' for these specific property types, leading to increased outreach with mountain realtors.
