Colin Denton reports that 40 Years of Zen provided a profound mental shift, lifting 98-99% of the heavy emotional and mental burdens he carried from his youth. After failing to see similar results with traditional therapy, Denton described the experience as removing a dimming filter, leaving him with greater perspective, insight, and emotional availability for his family.

The interview
What was your life like before attending 40 Years of Zen?
I have an amazing life that I'm very grateful for. I'm in recovery for over 20 years, and I have a lot to be thankful for. But there was some things kind of sitting on my shoulders from my childhood, my youth, my perspective on my relationship with my parents, who have both passed away, but that were really weighing me down.
What motivated you to seek out this program?
I was looking for some relief and a different perspective on a few different things that were kind of just a little bit of a shadow to what otherwise is an incredible life. My wife went through a few months before I did, and I saw some pretty significant changes in her, and she was kind of gently nudging me to attend as well.
Did you have any hesitations before joining?
I had looked through the website and I kind of see myself as very practical, down to earth kind of guy. And I thought, boy, is this kind of some voodoo stuff going clear out my chakras and some stuff that I wasn't real familiar with. And then I also was a little hesitant because I was a little afraid of what it might uncover, what kind of truths I might learn about myself.
What was the immediate result of the experience?
I literally felt like I was leaving there a new man. Lighter, greater perspective and insight. I'm excited about today, I'm excited about tomorrow. I feel like with some of this stuff kind of cleared from me or lifted from me, I'm going to be a better father and husband and friend.
Can you describe the shift you experienced in your daily life?
It sounds kind of crazy, but it just feels like I had this little filter that was, like, just kind of dimmed everything a little bit. And now it just feels like that filter is gone. And it's just this kind of bright, exciting place. My biggest shift is I feel like some kind of emotional and mental burdens have been like almost completely lifted from me. Like 98-99% of these really heavy things that were on mind and spirit and they just feel like they're gone.
Who do you think will benefit most from your transformation?
I feel like my experience is going to benefit probably my family the greatest—my children, my wife. I'm very hopeful that they will see some shifts in me that make me more available and kind of a safer, emotional place for them to go to.
Would you recommend 40 Years of Zen to others?
I would absolutely recommend 40 Years of Zen. I mean, I've already talked to my sister about it. I think I'm going to pay for her to go. I've recommended it to a couple of friends. I literally would have paid like a million dollars if somebody told me, 'Hey, Colin, this is the shift that you're going to have. This is the freedom that you're going to feel.' It's priceless.
Was there anything else notable about the onsite experience?
I got to mention Pierre, the chef. Oh, my goodness, the food was incredible, I just can't even express it in words. How tremendous I feel like my experience was there and the impact that it gave me.
Frequently asked
Is 40 Years of Zen just 'voodoo' or unscientific?
Colin Denton initially worried the program might be 'voodoo stuff' involving chakras that wouldn't align with his practical, down-to-earth personality. However, he found the end result was a tangible shift in perspective that made him feel like a 'new man.'
What if I am afraid of what I might uncover during the program?
Denton admitted to being hesitant because he was afraid of the truths he might learn about himself. Despite this fear, he found the experience provided freedom and a 'bright, exciting' outlook that he considered priceless.
How does 40 Years of Zen compare to traditional therapy?
Denton noted that while he had been in recovery for 20 years and utilized twelve-step programs, he was not seeing 'tremendous results' with therapy for his specific childhood burdens before attending 40 Years of Zen.
