The interview

What was the context for Amos Balongo joining your event?

Amos was one of 10 speakers who joined us for the Disrupt HR event. For Amos specifically, it was about the journey that he's been on, not only as a professional, but from a personal perspective, moving from his place of origin all the way to a new home. He just had a very new perspective that we had not brought to Halifax previously.

What is the goal of the Disrupt HR event series?

It's an event series that happens globally and that series of events are all around the disruption of the status quo in the field of HR. Whether you're a leader or an HR professional, if you have influence over others in the workplace, we want to hear from you with your disruptive idea and bold concepts that can change the world of work.

What were your initial expectations versus the actual delivery from Amos?

What I thought we were going to hear from Amos was his leadership lens on how to ignite the values-driven leader, and what we received from Amos was so much more. We gained insight into his own world of leadership and the worlds of leadership that he works in, which is both military as well as business.

What was the most significant takeaway regarding leadership styles?

We realized that it doesn't matter where in industry you sit, as a leader, you need to have a very similar way of being, and that is to be a servant leader. For us, he brought so much new perspective and an opportunity for us all to walk away thinking, how can we become this leader?

How did Amos's content impact you personally as a leader?

For me, hearing Amos' content around how to gain a voice, how to be present, and how to have humility at the same time as having confidence... that was really an important takeaway for me because it helped me understand as a woman I can still have a voice and still be my humble self.

What would you say to someone considering working with Amos?

I don't see how anybody could sit on the fence. You have a conversation with Amos and you know that you want to bring him into your organization. That's all I can say.
