The interview

What were your favorite activities during the Moab retreat?

I really enjoyed two out of the three times we went horseback riding. I'm not an experienced rider, but it was a surreal experience to be riding on a horse and looking at all the red rocks. I also did the standup paddle boarding two years in a row and was floating down the Colorado river this year.

How did you feel after completing the retreat?

After the retreat, I felt full of energy and excitement and just kind of almost like a high feeling. Like, wow, that was really fun and I hated for it to end. I met so many neat ladies all three years.

What was the social experience like arriving alone?

I arrived there knowing zero people and went away with a whole bunch of friends. It was so much fun. We were all in the same boat of menopause things and going through similar things and learned a lot from each other. It was just a really great bonding experience.

How does the program handle different fitness levels?

We're not all expected to be at the same level of hiking or whatever. Debra very much encouraged us to just do what was good for us and never to push it too hard. She didn't expect people to keep back because someone else was slower. It just seems like it works out that you find your pal and you're kind of the same and you hang together.

What did you learn from attending multiple retreats?

Having gone to three retreats, I can tell you that the first retreat, I kind of was like, whatever, I don't have to do all of this. I didn't know as much about hydration and eating during the retreats. I learned from experience that you do need to work out a little harder and hike a little more before you go. Each year it was even better because I took it more seriously.

How did you overcome your fears during the activities?

I'm not a really big water person. I was nervous about floating down the Colorado river, but then once I got out on there I conquered it. I realized I have a life jacket on and I'll be fine. It makes you feel good when you do something out of your comfort zone.

How did you first discover Flipping 50?

I found her accidentally on a YouTube video while searching for how to do a certain exercise. Then I worked my way into the Hot Not Bothered program, and then I went into the Stronger III program. I thought, I like this, I want this to be my workout person.

What is the overall impact the program has had on your life?

Now it's like I have a girlfriend working out with me when I go to the fitness room. It has me focused on being fit—not skinny, but just fit. Learning that I can push myself and climb up that big hill is good for the confidence part of yourself.

Frequently asked

Is the Flipping 50 retreat too difficult for beginners?

Rhonda Clements noted that participants are not expected to be at the same level. She highlighted that Debra Atkinson encourages everyone to do what is good for them without pressure to keep up with others or push too hard.

Do I need to go with a friend to a Flipping 50 retreat?

Rhonda arrived at her first retreat knowing zero people and left with a whole bunch of friends. She described it as a great bonding experience where women in the same stage of life naturally find 'pals' to hang out with.

How do you prepare for a Flipping 50 fitness retreat?

Based on her experience across three retreats, Rhonda learned that it is not just a 'walk in the park.' She recommends taking preparation seriously by hiking more, working out harder, and learning about proper hydration and nutrition before attending.
