The interview

Can you introduce yourself and your professional background?

Hi, I'm Guerry Grune and I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The name of our company is 3rd Rock Essentials. I am a PhD chemical engineer and also have a patent registration number, so I do patent work. And I also teach course in Duke University in sustainability and intellectual asset management, getting value for your IP.

How long have you been involved in the biohacking space?

I've been involved with the biohacking community for over five years now. With our 3rd Rock Essential products which are we basically our motto is 'If you wouldn't put it in your mouth and put it on your skin.' So, we make healthy vibrant things that resonates with the biohack community.

What has been the primary benefit of attending this event?

Number one benefit would be meeting the people. For me, it's about finding the people that are in my space and making the connections with those people. I've been very fortunate that I've met, I would say, at least two handfuls of people that I would want to around with more.

What were the highlights of the programming and speakers?

Having Damon here from Shark Tank was great. A lot of advice about how to run small businesses. A lot of people that I've contacted that might be interested in growing our business a little bit. So for me it was a matter of just increasing my viability in the network, I guess.

What would you say to someone considering attending this event?

I would say, if you're invited to come to the biohacking event - which is the business-oriented event that I'm at today and have been for the last three days - I would say, 'Take advantage of it.' You should do it and the reason you should do it is because you'll get exposure to whatever it is you want to do in this space. If you want to teach, if you want to provide services, if you want to provide products, if you want to network with the right people, if you want to get an investment or if you need some kind of advice on growing your business, this is the place to come.
