The interview

How long have you worked with Accolon and Inner Victory Champions?

This December, it will be 14 years that I've worked with Accolon both through the Inner Strength work as well as physical training. And it's one of the best decisions I ever made for myself.

What was your mental state before seeking training?

Before I sought out training from Accolon, I was in a place that my mind just wasn't healthy from previous negative experiences and traumas. I was very hyperreactive to a lot of things. I just... I never relaxed. I didn't let myself be calm - ever.

What were your first impressions of Accolon's coaching style?

The first day I met him, he was very calm and he wasn't overpowering, like saying, 'I have all the answers, and this will certainly solve all your problems.' It wasn't anything like that. It's 'This is what I offer. Here's how I think it'll help.' And it was really based on where I was at at the time.

How does this approach differ from other trainers you considered?

A lot of other people I had thought to work with were very much that 'we're going to throw you in the deep end.' But Accolon was wonderful about, 'Okay, what do you need from me? What about this approach works? What doesn't? How do we work around that?' And really make it tailored to me.

What specific results have you seen regarding your hyper-awareness?

As that settled down, I was able to address other challenges that were underlaying all of that and adding to it. And now when I face those same things, I don't spiral in the same way I normally would. I'm not battling myself as well as my other problems, whether they be self-doubt or feeling overwhelmed stress.

How has this training impacted your professional life as a dog trainer?

You can't lead others if you're not leading yourself properly. And that's one of the things I really learned and focused on and working with Accolon. I'm constantly around people trying to provide and guide them, and me just being calmer, it makes me more aware of what they need so that I can help them find their own guiding light.

What is your favorite discovery from this training?

I think the favorite thing I've discovered since training with Accolon is that I have more strength than I thought. Not just physical strength, but strength of being. And finding that has just been wonderful.

Frequently asked

Is the coaching at Inner Victory Champions a 'one size fits all' approach?

No. Heather Jelinek emphasizes that Accolon does not believe in 'cookie cutter' methods. He tailors every approach to the individual's unique challenges, asking what works for them and adjusting the plan accordingly.

Will the coach be too aggressive or overpowering?

Heather Jelinek noted that unlike other trainers who 'throw you in the deep end,' Accolon was calm and easygoing from the first day. He didn't claim to have all the answers but offered a collaborative, non-judgmental partnership.

Can life coaching help with professional leadership?

Yes. Heather found that by learning to lead herself and becoming calmer, she became more aware of what her clients need. She believes you cannot lead others properly if you are not leading yourself first.

And even if something goes astray and I kind of falter from the path that I'm on, he's right there to help me get back on it without judgment. I'm Heather Jelinek, I'm from Burnsville, Minnesota, and I am a certified dog trainer. Well, before I sought out training from Accolon, I was in a place that my mind just wasn't healthy from previous negative experiences and traumas. I was very hyperreactive to a lot of things. What about this approach works? What doesn't? How do we work around that?" And really make it tailored to me, Accolon was wonderful. As I told him my story, what I was dealing with and the results - especially, like, with that hyper-awareness. I mean, just being hyper-aware is absolutely exhausting. And as that settled down, I was able to address other challenges that were underlaying all of that and adding to it. And now when I face those same things, I don't spiral in the same way I normally would. You can't lead others if you're not leading yourself properly. And that's one of the things I really learned and focused on and working with Accolon. I'm constantly around people trying to provide and guide them, and me just being calmer, it makes me more aware of what they need so that I can help them find their own guiding light, while not diminishing my own. With this training now, I'm not battling myself as well as my other problems, whether they be self-doubt or feeling overwhelmed stress. Now I can deal with them instead of kind of shoving them under the rug, if you will. I think the favorite thing I've discovered since training with Accolon is that I have more strength than I thought. Not just physical strength, but strength of being. And finding that has just been wonderful. Accolon does not believe in cookie cutter in any way, shape or form. Everything is very personalized because our struggles, our challenges are very unique to us. But what brought it on, how we deal with it... is so different that everything is really about, okay, what is the challenge? How do you deal with it? And how do you want that to change? If somebody was sitting on the fence about training, I would encourage them to take that risk because you find that support that you need. That's invaluable. I would encourage them to give it a shot. Take the leap of faith. You try something that you haven't tried before, and you get that positive result. Your life is so much better. You feel so much better. And that risk is absolutely worth it.
