The interview

Can you describe the severity of your daughter's condition before finding IHC?

My daughter developed severe eczema pretty suddenly and it was really bad—to the point where I was having to scrub blood out of her bed sheets every single morning and wash them. Her skin was literally—looked like it was hanging in shreds from her back. She was so uncomfortable to the point where even the seams in clothing were causing her irritation. I mean, really, she had to just hang around in her pajamas all day because everything else was just aggravating her skin.

What was your experience with previous medical treatments?

We had tried a lot of different things. We have been to a lot of doctors. They all just wanted to recommend steroids as an answer. But I knew in my heart, as a mom, that that was just a bandage to something deeper that was causing the problem and that those steroids were not the long-term solution.

What attracted you to Dr. Temple and Integrative Health Carolinas?

I had watched a podcast where Dr. Temple was the guest. And when she talked about being a mom of children with eczema, that's something I immediately connected to because I felt that so many doctors didn't really understand what it felt like to be a mom going through what we were going through. I also love the fact that she was not only a pediatrician that was board-certified, but also that she was an integrative health physician.

How did the initial consultation go?

I remember the first thing that she told me when I brought my daughter into the office—and this was when she was at her worst. I remember Dr. Temple sitting down with us and saying, 'I have some ideas of things that can work and, you know, if they don't work, don't worry. I have more things that we can try.' When we walked out of that first visit, my daughter said, 'I like Dr. Temple. She gets me.'

What specific treatments made the biggest difference?

I think the difference is Dr. Temple recommended supplements that I would not have known and they truly made a difference. She was willing to look at my daughter not just as the 'one problem of eczema' but really see what really was going wrong in her body and what we really needed to change so that this could be a lasting change.

What is your daughter's health status today?

My daughter's skin is completely healed. Like, she is just a healthy, happy teenager now. She's able to do the sports that she loves without the irritation and the itching and the discomfort that she used to feel. She can wear regular clothes, she can attend school.

How would you describe the staff and overall practice environment?

Dr. Temple's staff is like a huge family. Like, everything's seamless. You know, there's never a beat missed. I never feel like something was lost. I just feel like they're working together as a team to really make sure my daughter gets the best care.

Frequently asked

Are steroids the only option for treating severe childhood eczema?

Susan Strebel found that while other doctors only recommended steroids, she viewed them as a temporary bandage rather than a long-term solution. At Integrative Health Carolinas, she found success using specific supplements and lifestyle changes that addressed the root cause of the inflammation.

How does Dr. Temple's approach differ from traditional pediatricians?

Susan notes that Dr. Temple is both a board-certified pediatrician and an integrative health physician. This allowed her to look at the daughter's body as a whole rather than just treating the 'one problem of eczema,' leading to lasting changes.

What is the patient experience like at Integrative Health Carolinas?

Susan describes the staff as a 'huge family' where care is seamless and no details are missed. She highlighted that her daughter felt understood for the first time, saying, 'She gets me,' after their first visit.
