Under Dr. Bismah Irfan’s care, Kim adopted a vegan diet and specific supplements, resulting in increased kidney function and enough energy to complete 1,300 Orange Theory classes at age 77.

The interview

Can you tell us about your background and your diagnosis?

My name is Kim Lash, I'm a recovery counselor in Cleveland, Ohio. I was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease at the Cleveland Clinic by the head of Nephrology. I was in shock and devastated because it sounded like a death sentence; all I could think of was dialysis. The doctor told me, 'I'm sorry, Kim. There's really nothing you can do.'

How did you find Dr. Irfan?

I could not accept that there was nothing I could do. I started researching and networking, and another doctor at the Center for Integrated Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic told me about a doctor in Avon Lake who treats kidney disease through diet and natural ways. That led me to Dr. Irfan.

What was your first impression of meeting Dr. Irfan?

My whole life changed because I had hope. She had a smile on her face and said, 'I can't believe that's what they said to you.' She explained that other doctors aren't trained the way she is. I knew right away she was someone I wanted on my team.

When did you realize the treatment was working?

The moment I realized it was really working was when my blood test showed that my kidney function started to increase. The specialists had said it would be difficult just to keep it at stage 3, but Dr. Irfan said, 'Oh no, this is what you have to do.' I went on a vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free diet.

How has your energy level changed since starting the program?

I didn't realize the difference until I changed my diet and took the supplements she recommended. I'm 77 years old and I just achieved 1,300 classes in Orange Theory. I go three, four, or even five times a week and I really feel great.

How do you feel about your health today?

I have hope, and having hope makes all the difference in the world. I have stage 3 kidney disease, but it doesn't affect my life in a negative way anymore. I just think of myself as healthy. Anyone who has kidney disease needs to talk to Dr. Irfan because she will change your life for the better.

Frequently asked

Is the Kidney Institute program expensive?

Kim Lash noted that the program is 'very expensive,' especially as a retiree. However, she emphasized that her health is a priority and she continues to work part-time to afford the care because of the results she has seen.

Can kidney function actually increase after a stage 3 diagnosis?

Yes, Kim Lash reported that while conventional doctors told her there was nothing she could do, her blood tests under Dr. Irfan's care showed her kidney function started to increase after changing her diet and taking supplements.

What kind of diet does Dr. Bismah Irfan recommend for kidney health?

Kim Lash followed a strict vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free diet for several years under Dr. Irfan's guidance. Recently, she was given permission to reintroduce fish into her diet.

Full transcript

Speaker 0: My name is Kim Lash. I am in Cleveland, Ohio, cloudy Cleveland, Ohio, and I am a recovery counselor. I've been involved with addiction counseling for thirty four years. Well, I Erfan. Erfan. At least that's what I've been calling her. Okay, well, I was diagnosed with kidney disease at the Cleveland Clinic by the head of Nephrology. And when I had no idea there was anything wrong with me, I was exercising, I eat very healthy. And someone had told me my numbers were off. My cousin is a doctor at the clinic, and she said to me, you need to get your blood work done again. Your creatinine is very high. So I went and I had it, you know, I had it done again. They took my blood and they said, you have stage three kidney disease. And I looked at them and I said, what are you talking about? I mean, was in shock. I was so devastated and I was filled with fear because that really sounded to me at that time. And I know that I'm bright and that I have a lot of knowledge in different areas, but not with kidney disease. It sounded like a death sentence on a certain level because, you know, all I did was think of dialysis stage three. And I looked at this, the doctor and I said, so what can I do about this? Because that's who I am. Like, how can I solve a problem? We're going to figure this out. And he looked at me and he said, I'm sorry, Kim. There's really nothing you can do. And I burst out in tears. And I left that appointment and I said, I cannot, I cannot accept this. So that was my journey that led me to Doctor. Erfan, because she was a doctor at the clinic, but I had never heard of her. So, started talking to different people that I knew. I started researching and networking to find out if there was a doctor that dealt with kidney disease that just did not have the same answer of you, there's nothing you can really do. I ended up, thank God, with Doctor. Erfan. And another doctor actually in the Center for Integrated Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic said there is a doctor in Avon Lake, Ohio. You know, she believes that through diet and other forms of natural, natural ways, you know, I'm not sure if it had to do with supplements, this doctor said, I have no idea. But I know she has something to do with diet that she treats kidney disease. He said, I don't know anything about this, you know, but here. So, she was working, you know, like an hour away from where I live. And I called up, I, you know, I got an appointment with her as it ended up, I went to see her for the first time and I just, I, I met with her and my whole life changed because I had hope. Well, she was at the Cleveland Clinic then, and I couldn't, I met with her. And it's funny because I have hearing loss, so it's, I have a difficult time, you know, sometimes processing people's voices. And because, you know, she has an accent, I'd have to make her I'd ask her to have to make her. I'd say, could you please repeat this? Because I really wanted to understand what she was saying to me, But the message was very clear. The message was Kim. She had this smile on her face. She said, I can't believe that that's what they said to you. She then she said, Yes, I believe it because, you know, these die the doctors aren't trained the way she's trained. She, they did not have the same beliefs that she did. She said there is hope. There is hope. And I just believed her. I, I'm a good judge of character. I, I am a recovering person. I've been sober over forty years. And I had this great insight into my heart where I knew right away that she was someone that I wanted on my team. And so here I am, how many years later has this been that I've been with her? I followed her to Texas. Snowbird. Snowbird. Because my numbers were okay. Okay. The moment that I realized that this was really working was that my blood test showed that my kidney function started to increase. I mean, I had, I was diagnosed with stage three kidney disease. And when I first heard of, heard that from the, you know, head of nephrology at the clinic, they said, you know, it's going to be very difficult for you to keep it at that level. And with Doctor. Erfan, she said, oh no, this is what you have to do. And what I did, despite my stubborn self, no, I went on a vegan diet. I was already gluten free, and I was dairy free, but I stopped eating any meat and fish, nothing. And so for years, that's the type of diet I've been on. Now I'll have fish. She gave me permission. I could have fish now. But I started to see my numbers started to increase, which was just, you know, gratifying and shocking. Well, I know my, not that I always have been an energetic person, but I didn't realize the difference when I started to change my diet and take supplements. Some of the supplements that she recommended for me to take really changed my energy level. And as an example, as I shared with you, I'm 77 years old. I've, I have just had, I, I just achieved, I think 1,300 classes in Orange Theory. I go three or four times a week, or five times a week. I'm not supposed to go five, but I have to be honest and say sometimes I do. And I really feel great. So, know it has to do with what I've been doing with Doctor. Erfan all these years. Okay. Since working with Doctor. Irfan, I have hope. And having hope makes all the difference in the world. When you feel hopeless and there's nothing you can do about a situation, whether it's medical, emotional, physical, spiritual, it's a horrible place to be. But I have hope. And I know if I do what I'm supposed to do and follow, you know, the guidelines of what Doctor. Erfan and I talk about and what she feels is best for me, I will continue to be very healthy. And I am healthy. And I just think of myself as healthy, and that's it. So I have stage three kidney disease. It doesn't affect my life in a negative way anymore. It's just, I've had asthma since I was seven years old. So I have asthma. It's no big deal. You know, and that's how I feel about it, which is really shocking if you, if you would have seen me the day that I was told I had kidney disease. I felt like my life was over, and now I have so much hope. And I tell everyone how, you know, they should work with her. Anyone who has kidney disease needs to talk to Doctor. Erfan because she will change your life for the better. Did I pass the test? Did I pass? Well, I do holistic medicine also. I'm an energy medicine practitioner for longer than she's been alive. I've done Reiki, it's true. I've been a Reiki master for like almost fifty years, you know. I've been trained in all these different modalities. So, when I first met her, she wasn't at the place that I, I mean, we were, she went, you do this, you know? We, we really gelled in that respect because I always looked at different ways to deal with people's emotions. And she, you know, has come away. She has embraced this now, you know, breath work, energy work, you know, nutrition. So I just, she's, she's the best thing that ever happened to me, really. And I'm not getting paid to say this, you know that. Fact, I pay her. Yeah, right. To call me. I'm not kidding. I'll talk to them. I talk, you know, I would tell them to trust my No, I would trust Doctor. Erfan in her program. And if you wanted to talk to someone who's experienced it, they could call me. I'm not kidding, really. I'm serious. Because I wanna help people. Not really. I don't know what else, you know, there's really nothing I could say except now this is between you and me, right? This isn't I go I always say to her, I go, well, I wish you were at the Cleveland Clinic. This is very expensive for me. Because, you know, I'm divorced. I got divorced while I've been seeing her and retired. I said so. It's like but I still it's a priority. My health is a priority. So I don't know, she don't think she'll want me to talk about. Okay. No, but I'm just, it's very expensive. And I mean, it's very expensive. Right. And I know, I know your health is very important, but I, you know, I think, I mean, I'm really blessed because I still work part time. So, I mean, I most, it's like my, it's funny because my, even my kids say, you know, and my kids are probably way older than you. And they go, Mom, why are you No, you look so young. You're amazing. Oh my God. My oldest is gonna be 45, but honest to God, I think you are in your forties. Do people tell you that too, yeah? Oh, you are amazing. That right. Yeah. Because I really don't you feel very young? Like, I feel like I'm in my 50s. Maybe that's old, but. Of course. Whatever she wants. You know? Oh, you know what I wanted to ask you about? Now that I'm talking to you, this is so, so, you know, on my other part of, you know, like I shared with you, I worked with addictions. I've helped people with addictions for thirty five, forty, you know, years. I've been sober for forty years. I have my master's plus whatever. I, you know, I'll, I work part time now, but this, a gentleman who owns a big company here in Cleveland, I, you know, if his employees or anyone needs help, you know, he'll call me. And he said to me, here's a big, he said to me, he goes, you need to do something. And this is like the fifth person that said this in the year. And my, and I keep thinking maybe I should listen to this because I, I want to, I, I'm here. I can, I know there's hope, okay, with addictions? There is no reason that someone can't get help. I know, I mean, I, I know. I'm a nice Jewish girl that was in the depths of despair and wanted to die, you know? And I know there's hope no matter. And I work with, you know, teenagers up to like executives, you know? I have an 85 year old client. So, said to me, you need to do something where, I don't know, he said, if it's a podcast, you do a little blurb and put it on. I'm not good with social media, where you'd say, hey, do you feel like you're in the depths of despair? You can't stop drinking or using drugs? Is your business falling apart? Is your wife leaving you? I mean, he went through this whole thing with me and I went, he goes, he said, call me, because I can help you. And I went, so I don't know. I mean, he just did this last week and I went, I don't know. I don't know, I wouldn't even know what to do. Yeah. How do you do that? Should I try that? Who would I contact? Like, what type of person? I didn't know nothing about social media. One of my favorite stores. Yeah. Are you in Mexico now? My girlfriend and her husband go there once a year. They love it there. Yeah. I mean, I've never been there. They said it's amazing. I'm gonna tell my girlfriend, Anne, and her husband, Jim. They've been going there for fifteen, twenty years. Provide five. Did you ever meet anyone from Cleveland, Ohio named Ann and Jim Derry? Because they've gone there fifteen, twenty years. I'm so happy for you.
