The interview

What was your situation before finding Little Deeds?

I was abruptly laid off from my job on October 29th, 2024, and faced a financial crisis. I was almost evicted, my car was almost repossessed, and I was literally one paycheck away from being homeless. My wife was also going through chemotherapy for breast cancer at the time.

How did you first get in contact with the organization?

I was given some options as a Navy veteran, and I was eventually recommended to them by a hospital caseworker that my wife was assigned to as a breast cancer patient.

What was your initial experience speaking with Greg and Kelly?

I explained that I was going through a financial hardship and didn't know how I was going to make it the next day with food, water, and shelter. Right away they listened to me. Greg started pointing me in the right direction, including working with my congressman and council member to get household funds.

What specific services did they provide to help you get back on your feet?

They helped us with groceries when we didn't have food and gave me gas money to get to my new job. Greg also helped me update my outdated resumé. Most importantly, they listened and provided a bit of counseling to help my mental health.

How did they assist with your home's plumbing issues?

We had plumbing issues for 15 years and quotes for $10,000 to $15,000. Little Deeds introduced me to a plumbing company that discounted it so low for me and did the work a day after Christmas.

What is your life like now after working with them?

My life is a lot more pleasant and positive. My mental health is better, I'm managing my money better, and most of my bills are paid up. I have a new career in hospitality and I get my first paycheck tomorrow.

Frequently asked

Is Little Deeds a legitimate organization for veteran assistance?

Larry White initially questioned their legitimacy but felt confident after being referred by a hospital caseworker assigned to his wife. He confirmed they are 'legit' based on their rapid response times and professional coordination with government officials.

How fast does Little Deeds respond to emergency requests?

According to Larry White, the team responds within 15 to 20 minutes, even during evenings and weekends, which was critical when he faced immediate utility shut-offs and eviction.

Does Little Deeds help with home repairs?

Yes, they introduced Larry to a plumbing company that provided a significant discount on a major repair that had been quoted at $10,000 to $15,000, completing the work just after Christmas.

To anybody out there looking for integrity, they have leadership they have compassion for people that are going through tough times. I never thought it would be me going through something like that. I never thought I would be literally, you know, one paycheck away from being homeless. They came, they got our house in order for us. They helped us with groceries when we didn't have food. They helped with everything. And I am so grateful. When I knew I could do a testimony, I wanted to make sure that the word gets out about Little Deeds because they are in the business of helping people. And I am forever grateful. Hello, My name is Larry White, Sr. I am a native of Gary, Indiana, but I now reside in Maryland. And my profession for the past 30 years have been IT. But I have just now moved on into the hospitality realm. So, October 29th of 2024, life was great, and then it wasn't. I was abruptly laid off from my job and I faced financial crisis. Almost evicted, almost car repossessed. Just a big financial nightmare. I didn't have anywhere to turn. And I was given some options as being a Navy veteran. And somehow I got ahold of little deeds and wow, my life changed. When I initially spoke with Greg and Kelly, I explained to them that I was going through a financial hardship. I didn't know how I was going to make it... the next day - not the next week, the next day - with food, water, shelter for my family. And right away they listened to me. I also had some health challenges. My mental health was really at stake and I just didn't know where to turn and I just laid it all out to Greg and Greg, start pointing me into the right direction. He pointed me into directions where I ended up working with my congressman, my council member to get funds to help with some of the things that were going on in the household. I got this new job and I didn't have gas money to get to the job. Greg helped me out. He also helped me with my resumé. He said, "Larry, your resumé is outdated. You need to update your resumé." So Greg helped me with that. But probably most important thing, they listened to me and they always knew where to point me in the right direction. We've been having plumbing issues in this home for 15 years. The basement has flooded out multiple times. I was getting quotes for 10 and $15,000. I didn't know where to turn. To make matters worse, my wife was going through chemotherapy at the time for breast cancer. And that's what's special about Little Deeds. They understood that, here I bought almost like a lemon, a lemon, if you will, to this home. Little Deeds introduced me to a plumbing company. They discounted it so low for me. They came and did the work a day after Christmas. I was so happy. After working with Little Deeds, my life is a lot more pleasant, more positive. My mental health is better. I'm now managing my money better. where most of my bills are pretty much paid up. And I've got this new job, I get my first paycheck tomorrow. So, I'm excited not only have a new career, but be able to stay on track because Little Deeds pointed me in the direction of helping me get my bills paid. So now I need to stay on top of that. And they've put me in a clear mind zone. I can get some sleep at night. And so life has been much better working with Little Deeds, getting resources, information - also a little bit of counseling, too. I would recommend Little Deeds to everybody. I was recommended to them by the hospital by a caseworker that my wife was assigned to as a breast cancer patient. And I said, "well, they got to be legit if they're being recommended by a hospital caseworker." I called Little Deeds and let me tell you, not 24 hours, but these folks get back to you within 15, 20 minutes. When your water is being cut off, you're looking at a mortgage and you can be evicted... they understand that and they respond. They respond in the evening, weekends.
