The interview

What was your health situation before finding Mastering Diabetes?

I was dealing with the classic weight gain and I was not checking my blood sugars. I had initially lost well over a hundred pounds when I first was diagnosed, but the pounds were coming back and I felt out of control. My A1c had shot up to 6.9 from a low of 5.5, and my weight had shot up to 194 pounds from 130.

Why did you decide to join the coaching program specifically?

I knew of Mastering Diabetes for many years and followed their YouTube videos, but what I was doing wasn't working because I was not focused. I saw a video about the coaching program and thought I needed help. I was very skeptical because I wasn't somebody who wanted to be coached, but it ended up being my favorite part.

What was the most impactful part of the coaching experience?

The coaching and how supportive my coach was. They took the time to match me with a coach that met my desires and my 'why.' Having the coach tell me I needed to talk about my 'why' on a daily basis and write it out in a journal every morning is exactly what made me successful.

How did the community and group support help you?

The people in my group have become sort of like my family. They know what struggles I am suffering from because they have the same struggles. I think about them when I am having a struggle and they can help me. The coaching is absolutely fantastic.

What specific health results have you achieved since starting?

Since starting Mastering Diabetes, I've lost 50 pounds and my A1c dropped from 6.9 to 5.8. I was never on any medication, and one of my goals was to stay off of diabetes medication, so I am very happy with my results.

How has your relationship with food changed?

I've gained control of my life back. I know what I can eat—there's no 'you can't eat something,' it's 'when can I eat it?' and 'how much can I have?' I still enjoy treats, fruit, pasta, and potatoes. One of the systems is having a green light dinner, and having toast at breakfast or lunch has helped me keep my insulin resistance very low.

Frequently asked

Is coaching necessary if I already know about plant-based nutrition?

Molly Bainter was initially skeptical of coaching because she already followed plant-based experts like Robbie Barbaro, but she found that the coaching provided the focus and support she lacked. She credits the coaching and the 'finding your why' exercise as the primary reasons for her success.

Can I still eat pasta and potatoes on a diabetes program?

Yes, Molly explains that the program teaches you how and when to eat foods like fruit, pasta, and potatoes rather than restricting them. She specifically mentions using 'green light dinners' and timing carbohydrate intake to maintain insulin sensitivity.

Is the investment in a diabetes coaching program worth the cost?

Molly believes the investment is well worth it, noting that the cost is offset by no longer buying unhealthy food and avoiding future medical expenses. She emphasizes that there is no price tag you can put on regaining control of your health.

Hi, my name is Molly Bainter, and I live in Port-- my name is Molly Bainter, and I live in Portland, Oregon, and I have type 2 diabetes. Okay. So before I found Mastering Diabetes, I was dealing with, uh, the classic weight gain. Uh, I was not checking my blood sugars to see what I was. I was-- I had been diagnosed previously, obviously, but I just was not checking it. I didn't, uh... probably didn't wanna know how my eating was affecting me. Uh, and I had initially lost well over a hundred pounds when I first was diagnosed, but what happened was the pounds were coming back. And I've honestly felt out of control. And I knew of di- Mastering Diabetes for many years, followed up, you know, their YouTube videos, uh, every interview they gave. I knew about them. But it wasn't until I got my blood sugars taken with the doctor, my A1C, and it had shot up to six point nine from a low of five point five. And I thought, "Oh my gosh, [chuckles] I need to do something." Um, and what I was doing wasn't working. So, uh, I knew I had to really get help and get support, and that's how I got to Mastering Diabetes. So my doctors were telling me that as long as I was below a certain level, a certain A1C, which for them was over seven, that I was controlling my diabetes, but I knew I wasn't. Um, I wasn't feeling very well. Uh, I was tired. Um, I just felt like I wasn't in control of my health. And so when I got my most-- or when I got my A1C at s- uh, six point nine, I knew I had to do something. Uh, and my weight had shot up to a hundred and ninety-four pounds, uh, down, you know, from a hundred and thirty, so I knew that I had to, uh, had to do something. So, like, a-as I said, I knew of di- Mastering Diabetes because I have been in the whole food plant-based sys- you know, society, uh, for many years. Uh, so I knew of, uh, Robbie, and I've listened to his interviews, and I was s-- I thought I was eating a lot like he, uh, recommended and the program recommended, but it wasn't working, right? Um, I was just-- I was not focused. And I think I-- what basically happened was I saw the, you know, an, not an ad, but one of his videos that I was watching about the coaching program. And I thought, "Maybe that's what I need to do. I need to get-- I need, I need help." And I was very skeptical because I wasn't somebody who wanted to be coached. Um, and going into it, even after signing up, I knew, "Eh, probably not gonna like the coaching part." [chuckles] And it ended up that was my favorite part of Mastering Diabetes was, was the coaching part and the support that I got. One hundred percent, yeah. Yeah. So [clears throat] I think the best part that I noticed about the Mastering Diabetes program itself really was the coaching and how supportive my coach was and how they took the time to match me with a coach that met my, m-my desires and what my why was going to be, right? And that's-- I say my why, that's exactly what the coaches talk about. What is your why? What can you hold on to, uh, for, you know, when, uh, when life happens and it gets a little bit tougher? What is your why? And so they're always talking about that, and I full- fully believe that that's exactly what made me successful. I think maybe that was-- would be an aha moment is that I actually had a why that was mine. Wasn't about other people, it wasn't about my family, it was for me. What did I want? And having the coach tell me I needed to, to talk about that on a daily basis, write it out, put notes where you would see it, uh, so I did. I had kept a paper journal, and that's the first thing I wrote every single morning was my why. And in the coaching sessions, we spoke about our whys and what our words were. And I was very skeptical of that, skeptical about that, but it really, it really does help, uh, one thousand percent. I mean, the people in my group, um, I think about when I wanna talk to them, when I'm having a struggle, uh, it's because they have become sort of like my family. They know what struggles I'm, I am suffering from. They have the same struggles. Maybe they have different struggles, that type of thing, but they can help me. So I fully believe that, uh, that is the best part of Mastering by Diabetes, besides the great recipes [laughs] that they have. But the coaching is, is absolutely fantastic. Yeah. Okay. So, uh, the changes I've, I made, uh, since starting diabetes is I lost fifty pounds, uh, which was wonderful. I, I knew. Uh-huh. Okay. Mm. Oh, okay. All right. So, so before I started Mastering Diabetes, uh, I had gained about sixty pounds, uh, that I had lost previously. And since starting diabete-- or Mastering Diabetes, I've lost fifty pounds, and my A1C dropped from six point nine to five point eight. Uh, I was never on any medication, and I am glad for that. I have not had to g-- uh, be on any medication, and that was also one of my goals, was to stay off of the di-- uh, diabetes medication. Uh, so I'm very happy with my results. [clears throat] Okay. So I truly believe that the investment in diabetes was, was worth it to me. When, uh, I looked into what the, you know, what the coaching would be, I thought, you know, this... I, I would save this going to the grocery store and buying food that I [chuckles] wasn't supposed to be eating. Uh, um, so, uh, I'd like... Yeah, I, uh, so the, uh, I think the investment was, was well worth every, every cent. There are so many resources in Mastering Diabetes. Uh, the s-- my coach is available. My, my, um, small group is available to me. The community is available to me. There's really no price tag you can put on that. It's well worth the investment, uh, 'cause I invested in myself, in my health. Um, I-- You've all, all probably heard the adage, you can spend the money now, or you can spend the money later w-- in doctor's visits and medical and that type of thing. So, uh, I wanted to spend the money now, and I'm so glad I did. [clears throat] So I would say to somebody who is struggling that you can do it. Uh, this, the system absolutely works. I have seen it with everybody in my group. I've seen it with myself. Uh, it's, um... What you do is you gain-- With this program, you gain control of your life back, and that's what I felt that I didn't have before. I felt very out of control, and the Mastering Diabetes program has helped me regain that control. So I'm stronger. I can resist things that I couldn't resist before because I'm investing in me. I'm investing in my health. Uh, I know what, what I can eat. Th-there's no like you can't eat something. It's when can I eat it? How much of it can I have? I can still enjoy treats. I can still enjoy the food that I love, fruit and pasta and potatoes and all sorts of vegetables. I can have them, and I know how it-- that's going to affect me the next day. So one of the systems is, um, that you have g-a green light dinner, uh, and so I have really-- that has really helped me. It's also helped me to realize, oh, I can have a piece of toast, but I have it at breakfast or at lunch. Uh, that has helped me keep my insulin resistance very low or has lowered it. Uh, so I'm more sensitive, so which is, uh, something that has really helped me maintain and keep low bl-- uh, fasting blood sugar levels in the morning. Sorry. Okay. So before Mastering Diabetes, my A1C was six point nine, and it is now five point eight. No. Mm-mm. Right. Sure. Oh, so okay. Okay. [clears throat] Okay. I can do that. Yes.
