The interview

Can you describe your life and health before starting with The WAE Clinic?

Before beginning with the WAE Clinic, my life was a little chaotic. My husband had recently passed away, two of my children had just gotten married, and one was expecting my first grandchild. I realized I felt very unheard; I was gaining weight, and I felt like I couldn't sleep. Looking back, I can tell I was dealing with autoimmune issues, but they were going undiagnosed.

What made you decide to say 'yes' to The WAE Clinic?

What made me say 'yes' was its difference. It appeared to be something that I could step into, and learn from, and embrace what they were teaching me so that I could learn to take care of myself. I felt like they were going to try something less traditional with me.

Were there any concerns that might have prevented you from starting?

If there was something that would have prevented me from starting, it might have been not being heard. If I had gone in and felt like I was being pushed toward a certain treatment plan or a certain type of medication, I would have been putting the brakes on. I would have stopped and said, 'I need time to think on this.'

What was the biggest difference-maker in your treatment plan?

The biggest difference for me came from a food sensitivity test that they did for me. Prior to the test, I had already begun to remove gluten and soy. When they brought this giant list of food sensitivities to me, I already felt so much better without gluten and soy that I thought if I dropped all these, I might just be able to fly. I really felt so much better when I pulled those foods out of my diet.

What surprised you most about working with the clinic?

I think what surprised me the most was their willingness to listen to me and meet me where I was, even if I wasn't ready to move on a certain treatment plan. They were patient and calm with me and didn't frighten me into making a choice that wasn't right for me.

What are you able to do now that you couldn't do before?

I've been able to start Pilates, and I've really enjoyed it. It's fun to see muscle being built again where I thought I was just on this downward slope to old age. Now I am stronger than I was before, and I can pick up that 23-pound grandson without as much trouble as I had before.

Frequently asked

Will I be pressured into specific treatments or medications at The WAE Clinic?

Evelyn VanZant noted that her biggest concern was being pushed toward a specific treatment plan or medication. She found the clinic to be patient and calm, meeting her where she was even when she wasn't ready to move on certain plans.

How does The WAE Clinic handle chronic health patterns that keep returning?

Evelyn had struggled for 10 years with patterns where she would 'jump over one hoop' with a doctor only to fall back into the same issues. She found success at The WAE Clinic because they used less traditional methods, like food sensitivity testing, to address the root cause.

Can functional medicine help with age-related strength loss?

Yes, Evelyn reported that after following her personalized program, she was able to start Pilates and build muscle. She stated she feels stronger now than before and no longer feels she is on a 'downward slope to old age.'
