Dr. Mark Braunstein reports that 40 Years of Zen provided a total nervous system reset, resolving five years of chronic irritability, anger, and depression. Despite 30 years of psychiatric work and psychedelics, he found the combination of neurofeedback and psychotherapeutic techniques moved the needle more in one week than decades of other modalities.

The interview

What was your life like before attending 40 Years of Zen?

For the past five years, I've been struggling with irritability, anger, resentment, and depression. My life was full—I had a great career, family life, and love life—but I was suffering. I would wake up in the mornings harboring resentment and anger, and as a psychiatrist who has done a lot of work, I just couldn't figure out how to move past that sticking point.

What other modalities had you tried previously?

I've been doing personal work and therapy and psychedelics for 30 years. I've done a lot of psychedelic work and a lot of integration, but I still couldn't figure out how to get past these specific struggles with my mood and internal state.

What specific aspects of the program did you appreciate the most?

What made me appreciate the program the most were the skills of my facilitator and the safe container created by the staff. The group process was amazing, as was the professionalism, the environment, the atmosphere, and even the food we ate, which I hope to carry on as lifestyle changes.

What was the most significant shift you experienced during the week?

What shifted the most for me was my nervous system; I feel like I've had a reset of my nervous system and I feel like that is continuable. I have less anxiety, which is a pretty huge eternal gift. I'm going to feel less of what I don't want to feel, which allows more space for what I do want to feel.

How do you view your past traumas now?

I'm excited about seeing my life not as a story of traumas and the burden that I carry because of them, but to see my traumas as a gift and to have gratitude for everything I've experienced. I have gratitude and love and appreciation for who I am right now.

Why would you recommend 40 Years of Zen to others?

The main reason I would recommend it is because with the combination of their psychotherapeutic techniques and neurofeedback, I've seen changes in myself and my cohorts that we haven't seen in decades of other work. This moved the needle on me the largest of anything in 30 years.
