The interview
What motivated you to finally start writing your book?
I said, 'there's no right time. If I want to write the book, I just have to power through and do it.' It is easier said than done because I don't really know how to do it. And that's when I found Book Launchers, which really changed my life.
What is your book about and what is your professional background?
My name is Cynthia Pan, my book's name is Exit Strategies, Living Lessons from Dying People. I'm a doctor in palliative care, which is for patients who have serious illnesses, and hospice care, which is for patients who have terminal illnesses.
How did the idea for the book develop?
After really taking care of these patients, I really felt like it was very emotional. I started journaling some of the themes, just for my own emotional processing. Then I started finding that there were a lot of themes which could become a book because I saw more patients and they were still facing the same things, without the knowledge that I had gathered.
What challenges did you face before finding Book Launchers?
I was always waiting to find the right time to do it. I was trying to find ways to keep myself accountability. I actually hired a coach, it just didn't work because they didn't really have the know-how. So when I found Book Launchers, it was not only accountability, but the know-how.
What was your experience like in the initial writing class?
I joined, I think it was a 9 or 10-week class where Julie said, 'If you do exactly what I say, and you come, and you do the work, you will end up with an actionable draft by the end of the 9 or 10 weeks.' which is exactly what happened. It was really great community, and there were other authors, and they were struggling. We would have timed writing during the actual sessions.
Why did you choose Book Launchers over other companies?
There was another company that I was checking out, and after I met with them, I just didn't really like the vibe. It didn't really seem like they cared. Then whenever I would attend Julie's sessions, she was just very warm and bubbly, and the team was great. During the sessions, I would always learn something.
Which specific services did you utilize at Book Launchers?
I totally recommend Book Launchers because Julie Broad and her team are excellent. I benefited from accountability, also the editing, both the content editing and the line editing. I did use the ghost writing service, which was excellent. I used the website creation. I used the book concept, kind of designing the cover, the font. I'm still using Book Launchers for marketing.
