The interview

What is your experience with Megan Walker and her training?

I have always been really inspired by Megan Walker, whether it's a webinar or the free training she does. Honestly, if you can get a whole day or any type of exposure to her, you walk away a better clinician.

Can you tell us about your professional background and specialty?

I'm Jocelyn Hill, a board-certified health and wellness coach. My career was shaped by starting at a functional medicine clinic where I coached hundreds of women and was introduced to functional genomics—using genetic testing to personalize diet and lifestyle.

How do you view the rise of AI in the health coaching industry?

I've been thinking about what AI means for coaching, given people are already using it for therapy. I see clients using ChatGPT for everything from snacks to workouts, but AI doesn't know your genetics. That makes what I'm doing feel quite unique.

What challenges did you face when launching your own practice in 2021?

I thought I would lead with habit change and neuroscience from my training at Duke Integrative Medicine, but the market was not ready for that. I realized that while people might decline 'health coaching,' everyone wants to learn about themselves through genetic testing.

How has Impact LIVEs specifically helped your business growth?

Impact LIVEs has always given me a boost, even if it's once a year. It encouraged me to think about what makes me different in a cluttered space like longevity and precision wellness, and to not run my business on autopilot.

What is the unique approach you have developed for your practice?

I have blended genetic testing with lifestyle medicine and neuroscience stuff from Duke. It is that trifecta that makes me very unique—a real-life 'skills over pills' approach.

What was a major realization you had during an Impact LIVEs event?

I had an epiphany a couple of years ago that I am good at making complex science simple and getting people excited about making changes. The hard part is the strategy of getting them from where they are today to where they want to be in six months.

I'm Jocelyn Hill. I'm a board-certified health and wellness coach. Really shaped how I practice is starting my career at a functional medicine clinic, where I coached hundreds of women and was initially introduced to functional genomics. So, using genetic testing using that, you know, using genes to actually personalize someone's diet and lifestyle. I think in the last year or so, you know, with everything that's going on with AI, what does that mean for health coaching? Just given how people are already using AI for therapy? What does this mean for coaching? I mean, I'm seeing it with all of my clients. using ChatGPT and AI for just about everything from, you know, what snack to have after a workout, to like, you name it. ⁓ But AI doesn't know your genetics. So it's the one thing that I feel really good about, like what I'm doing is quite unique. So I had done a very cool program at Duke Integrative Medicine. It was really based on the neuroscience of behavior change. So I trained to be a coach before coaching was really popular. And honestly, when I launched my own practice officially in 2021, I thought that's what I would be leading with, you know, all the habit stuff, behavior change. And really, the market was not ready for that. I had all this experience with functional genomics. Naturopaths were not doing this testing. MDs were certainly not doing this testing. Chiropractors weren't doing this testing. What I realized is that, you know, a lot of people who are, you know, they're eating clean, they're working out, they're doing yoga. If you say to them, like, what about health coaching? They would say, "Well, I'm good, thanks." Whereas with genetic testing, everybody wants to learn more about themselves. So suddenly I found myself, whether I was at an event or I was at a dinner party, the next day I would have three DMs. I wanna do that The DNA testing was the door opener to health coaching, which was really interesting. didn't... think that would be the case, but it's the DNA testing that got people excited about their own biology. I've always been good at making complex science. really simple. And I had this sort of epiphany during one of the impact lives a couple of years ago that, well, I'm kind of doing the same with health. And that's a real skill, to be able to get people excited about making changes. How do they see themselves in six months or a year? The hard part, of course, is getting from where they are today to where they wanna be. And that's strategy.
