The interview

How has your life changed since starting MedChefs?

My life has changed since I've started using MedChefs. This started about six months ago, and I was barely able to leave the house. I have several stairs to my building. I wasn't really able to drive my car—it's a stick shift. I wasn't even able to watch my grandson because it was too much for me and he's eight years old. But since then, within two months, I've started getting up and down the stairs at the drop of a dime.

Why did you decide to start the MedChefs program?

I started the MedChefs program at the suggestion of a doctor who thought it would be helpful in supporting my heart health and my kidney health, and my all around physical well-being. There was no hesitations to start with the program.

What is the daily experience of using the program like?

You look it over, you read, you look at recipes, you find different flavors to mix with different tastes, and you do a lot of cleaning of fresh fruits. I'm teaching my grandson what I'm doing and he helps me do some of the cutting; I think it's really just a good idea for the whole family.

How does MedChefs compare to other diets or exercise programs you've tried?

I have tried dieting, have tried exercise, I have tried everything. The MedChefs program makes you somewhat accountable for what you eat, but they never make it punitive. They don't say, 'oh, don't have something that you like.' It's not to torture you, it's to just guide you.

What physical changes have you noticed regarding the food you eat?

The longer that you're using the program, the more that sugar is just too sweet or certain things don't sit with your body well and you can tell that you fed your body the wrong thing. My actual body can feel it. Garbage weighs me down now. It makes me less active and that's one thing I don't need to do is start being less active.

How do you find the technology and the app interface?

The app is so easy to use once you start using it. At first it was kind of daunting and I didn't hold space for it in my head, but now it's very helpful and there's so many recipes. You could just type in what you want and then it'll pull up everything that might be in that suggested list. And then you just follow the recipe.

Would you recommend this program to others?

I would recommend the program to friends and family members because I already have. They have some of the health problems that I do, and I think that that would help them. It shows you how to eat what you like, but maybe substitute your jasmine rice with cauliflower. It changes very little, and it makes bigger changes in your physiology.

Frequently asked

Is the MedChefs app difficult to use?

Teppera Lowery admitted that the app felt 'daunting' at first and she didn't initially hold space for it in her head. However, she found that once she started using it, the app became very easy to navigate and helpful for finding specific recipes.

Does MedChefs require a restrictive diet?

According to Teppera, the program is not punitive and does not 'torture' you by banning foods you like. Instead, it guides you toward substitutions, like using cauliflower instead of jasmine rice, to make physiological changes without losing happiness.

How does MedChefs help with accountability?

Teppera uses the app to track whether she ate her MedChefs meals and notes that while she sometimes scores low, the honesty of the tracking makes her more mindful of what she puts in her body.
