The interview
Who are you and what do you do for a living?
My name is Susan Box. I'm from Hudson, Ohio and I'm a lawyer by profession. I'm a trial lawyer; I try cases all over the country.
What was your life like before working with Courtney at Moxie Fitness?
Before working with Courtney at Moxie my life was good but I felt like as I got older I needed to do more to eat better, to work out, to get in shape. I'm older, I have young kids and I wanted to be able to keep up with them.
What made you decide to work with Courtney and why have you stayed for so long?
First of all, she's one of the smartest women I know. She is always uplifting, she always has a solution and if that solution doesn't work she has another solution. I'm almost 65 and she knows what exercises are good for me. She pushes me and if something doesn't work she has other avenues to go down.
What were the main obstacles preventing you from working out in the past?
The thing that actually prevents me from working out is my job. It was very convenient for me to say, 'I don't have time for this.' I had small kids at the time they were in school. They had a lot of activities. And so, all of those excuses were very convenient and thankfully Courtney worked with me and urged me to make the time.
Why didn't working out at home work for you?
We had weights in our basement. We have a treadmill in our basement and I never really use those. On my own I am very happy to go, 'Oh, I'm supposed to be 12. 10's probably okay.' I just need that person that says, 'okay, we were going to go 10, let's go 11 today.' She's really good at knowing how much to push me to get more out of my workouts.
How has your life changed since you started working with Moxie Fitness?
I feel like I treat myself better, treat my body better, and as a result I am working out more on my own. I feel like I have more stamina. I feel like I get more rest. I feel better all around, having fun with my kids who are now young adults. We snow ski, we have a small cottage at a lake and we water ski and I feel like I can do those things without fear of hurting myself.
Frequently asked
How can a busy trial lawyer find time for fitness?
Susan Box initially used her demanding career and travel schedule as an excuse to skip workouts. She found success by treating her sessions with Courtney at Moxie Fitness as non-negotiable appointments on her calendar, which provided the necessary structure she couldn't maintain alone.
Is Moxie Fitness suitable for individuals over 60?
Yes, Susan is almost 65 and notes that Courtney is highly knowledgeable about what exercises are appropriate for her age. She highlights that Courtney creates science-based plans tailored to everyone from age 21 to 85.
Why is a personal trainer better than working out at home?
Susan found that having home equipment like a treadmill and weights wasn't enough because she would often cut her workouts short. She credits Courtney for pushing her to do more, such as running an extra minute or lifting heavier, which she wouldn't do on her own.
