Wycliff Rumble reviewed SpartanX, reporting that his utility bills dropped drastically during the summer months after installation. By choosing a contract with steady payments instead of a high-interest loan, he achieved financial predictability for his family of four, benefiting from a nine-month energy offset despite seasonal winter fluctuations.

The interview

What motivated you to consider solar energy for your home?

I've always thought about going solar. The bills were always high. My electricity bills were always high, and was always thinking of a way to get it down, but could not afford it. And I was just home one day, and two persons showed up my door telling me about solar. I liked what they were pitching, and I went with it.

What concerns did you have before deciding to move forward?

I had concerns seeing that there was other persons in the area that had solar, so I always heard that power company wouldn't want too much on the grid. I was worried that I recently bought the house at the time, so I didn't know how old the roof was, if there was anything that would actually fail me from being qualified for it.

How would you describe the customer service and communication you received?

I loved the way they corresponded with me. They were always in contact even after the installation. And the persons that I met at the initial stage showed up after to ask how was it and all that, so I just thought the customer service was great. They were always available; you could reach out at whatever time, just send a text, and he would respond.

How did the financial aspect of the deal work for your family?

It made sense for me because living in a home with four persons, I'm the breadwinner. You want to have as less debt as possible. When I found out that, hey, you don't have to go hunt down a loan with this big interest, you will just sign a contract, and you have a steady payment for a certain amount of years, and it won't increase by much, I was like, 'This is something to really consider.'

What has been the impact on your utility bills since going solar?

My utility bills have dropped drastically in the summer. The only side trap to it is that when it gets to the winter, the utility bill increases because of where I'm living, where it's cold, so not enough sunlight. But by the time you get to spring going all the way back through fall, that's a great offset. I have probably nine months to actually put away a little to offset that major bill in the winter.

Has having solar changed how you use energy in your daily life?

I think whether you're on solar or you're on the grid, you need to be trying to conserve as much as possible. It helps me when I think that, hey, you have this big project to do, or if I'm working on my car and I have to use a power tool, I'm like, 'Okay, at least my bill won't spike from using this big tool.' But not because I'm solar means I just will then just leave things on and running.

Frequently asked

Can I get solar if I don't know the age or condition of my roof?

Wycliff Rumble initially worried that his unknown roof age or condition might disqualify him since he had recently purchased his home. However, he found the SpartanX process simple and was able to qualify despite these initial concerns.

Do I need a high-interest loan to afford solar panels?

No, Wycliff Rumble noted that he didn't have to 'hunt down a loan with this big interest.' Instead, he signed a contract for a steady monthly payment that won't increase significantly over time.

How does solar perform during the winter months in cold climates?

Wycliff Rumble noted that in his cold climate, utility bills increase in the winter due to less sunlight. However, he uses the 'great offset' from spring through fall to save for those heavier winter seasons.
