The interview

What is the value of investing in business efficiency and profitability?

Time as an entrepreneur especially is of the utmost. You don't want to be up at 11 o'clock on a Saturday night pouring over details incorrectly and so an investment in yourself, an investment in your business to get some insight and some help and really change the course of profitability for your business—that means everything.

What was your business situation before working with Rising Oak Advisory?

Before I started working with Rising Oak, I was a mess. I took zero business courses, business classes, owning a business and operating a business frankly. And so my P&L, my cash flow statements were terrible. They were inaccurate, they weren't updated, they were sort of created on the fly.

How quickly did you see a transformation after starting?

When I brought Rising Oak in to help me it was a transformation. I mean, like in one conversation I went from lack of clarity, guessing and confusion to like a really eye opening experience and clarity that changed my business like overnight.

What made you hesitant to hire professional help initially?

I think I was hesitant frankly for pride. I thought I could do it on my own. I thought I could figure it out. I had confidence that I could learn this through YouTube videos to organize really the basic stuff around my business and I was wrong. From a cost perspective it was an expense that I didn't think that I needed to take but again I was wrong on that too.

What surprised you most about the working relationship?

Honestly, I was surprised by the care that he took in working with me. I thought I was going to feel like exposed and vulnerable and it was the real care that he took to understand and educate—both understand my business and what needed to be done strategically but also the education that happened with a ton of grace in helping me create better systems.

How would you describe the specific approach used by Rising Oak?

The white glove approach—it's custom, it's specific, it's just right. It's not a canned process, it's not a 'here work on this, fill this out, do this report.' It's really the bigger vision is strategic thinking that I needed at the time and that felt really good because I felt running pretty obscure business and a wellness center in a unique niche.

I would say to you how important is it for you to be efficient and effective and profitable? Time as an entrepreneur especially is of the utmost. You don't want to be up at 11 o'clock on a Saturday night pouring over details incorrectly and so an investment in yourself, an investment in your business to get some insight and some help and really change the course of profitability for your business that means everything! So, how much more time do you want to waste? How much more insufficiency do you want? You'll be looking back two or three years from now and going “Oh my gosh! I should have done that two or three years ago because I'd be in a totally different place. It would be less stressed, it would be more clear, it would be more effective and grow revenue." So, how bad do you want it? Hey, my name is Sean McCormick. I live in Seattle, Washington and I'm an entrepreneur working as a coach, consultant and podcaster. Before I started working with Rising Oak, I was a mess. I took zero business courses, business classes, owning a business and operating a business frankly. And so my P&L, my cash flow statements were terrible. They were inaccurate, they weren't updated, they were sort of created on the fly and when I brought Rising Oak in to help me it was a transformation. I mean, like in one conversation I went from lack of clarity, guessing and confusion to like a really eye opening experience and clarity that changed my business like overnight. I think I was hesitant of frankly for pride. I thought I could do it on my own. I thought I could figure it out. I had confidence that I could learn this through YouTube videos to organize really the basic stuff around my business and I was wrong. I thought I was doing it correctly and it was insufficient and there was a ton of waste but convinced that I could do it on my own. From a cost perspective it was an expense that I didn't think that I needed to take but again I was wrong on that too. Honestly, I was surprised by the care that he took in working with me. Again, I was super prideful of what I had built and now you know two years in before we started working together, my business was thriving kind of despite myself and I thought I was going to feel like exposed and vulnerable and it was the real care that he took to understand and educate both understand my business and what needed to be done strategically but also the education that happened with a ton of grace in helping me create better systems for myself that I would take and move into other subsequent ventures. The white glove approach - it's custom, it's specific, it's just right. It's not a canned process, it's not a here work on this, fill this out, do this report. It's really the bigger vision is strategic thinking that I needed at the time and that felt really good because I felt running pretty obscure business and a wellness center in a unique niche. I needed specific things. The model that I was running really needed tactician and a strategist and someone with a lot of experience to help me navigate the tricky aspects of running a niche business and so that white glove approach really did help because it kind of cut through the stuff that I probably we would have wasted a bunch of time on and that's what mattered most. I wanted to get strategic right away and figure this thing out quickly for basically for what I need not for what I thought I needed.
