The interview

What made you choose Universal Factory Direct over big box stores?

What made us choose Universal Direct over the big box stores was the overall personalization, if you will. This is our second time using Universal. We had a great experience building our home in New Hampshire, using Joe and being able to customize pieces, sizing, you know, hey, you want to maybe use 2 feet more in this space, you know, that kind of stuff. So personalization aspect definitely brought us back into using them again.

Can you describe the projects Universal Factory Direct worked on for you?

So we had 2 projects Universal worked on. The first one was at our home in Boston, was a few years ago was a whole kitchen, kitchen cabinets. The second project that we currently have in the house that we're standing in right now was the basement bar area. And this is just the second go around with different coloring and different, different types of cabinets, etc.

What was the design and ordering process like?

The design and ordering process were very easy, seamless, definitely a portion of it that we were able to make changes during the design process to ensure that that's exactly what we wanted.

How was the delivery and timing of the products?

We got every single piece that we ordered on time, exactly the date that we were told that was going to arrive. Because obviously as with these projects, you have countertops coming, you have appliances come at the same time, so they were able to time everything together and meet our expectations from a project standpoint.

Was there anything that surprised you about working with the team?

Something that surprised us working with the Universal team was the ease of just being able... there's a lot of anxiety going into designing a space. You just see a blank space. And the ease of kind of, 'Hey, yeah, we got this. This is what we can do. This is what we can't do.' Most of the time, there's a lot of what they can do, not what they cannot do. And also allows us to really customize the space into our liking.

What specific value did you see compared to other retailers?

Value that we saw going into, you know, leveraging Universal versus the big box is we didn't see the, you know, the typical upcharges that you start to see in the big box stores. These cabinets came with superior quality. You know, the soft closing of each of not only the drawers, but also the actual cabinet doors. And again, no upcharge of any of that stuff.

Were you able to include specific custom features in your cabinets?

We wanted to be able to put our utensils in the cabinet, and it was like, okay, yeah, we can do that. It definitely came with a drawer that already had the spaces already in for the utensils and knives, etc. Also, my wife's a wine drinker, so we wanted a little... a little cabinet that we can place wine bottles in. Anything in your imagination, which was a possibility, possibility. And the price tag did not go up astronomically.

Frequently asked

How does Universal Factory Direct compare to big box store pricing?

According to Pablo Cubas, the value was significantly better because they did not see the typical upcharges found at big box stores for premium features like soft-closing drawers and doors. He noted that even with custom additions, the price tag did not go up astronomically.

Is the cabinet quality at Universal Factory Direct actually high-end?

Pablo described the cabinets as having 'superior quality,' specifically noting the soft-closing mechanisms on both the drawers and the cabinet doors. He felt the customization options allowed for a high-end feel tailored to his specific needs.

Can Universal Factory Direct handle complex custom design requests?

Yes, Pablo mentioned that 'anything in your imagination was a possibility,' including custom utensil and knife drawers and specialized wine bottle cabinetry. He found the design process easy and was able to make changes to ensure the final product was exactly what they wanted.
