The interview
What was your situation before finding Energy4Life Centers?
I had a lot of stiffness in my hands and it took three doctors nine months to figure out what was going on. The medication carbidopa/levodopa helped me function and see my own handwriting again, but things were not great or perfect. I was 59 and struggling with fatigue, tripping up stairs, and I didn't have the energy or enthusiasm to go on vacation.
What results have you seen since your treatment in April?
It is now August and I am my old self. I went to London two weeks ago and one day I did 25,000 steps, dragging my husband along like I always do. The fatigue really has dissipated and I rarely feel worn out, which was a big concern because we like to be active on vacation.
How has your sleep changed since working with the clinic?
Sleeping has improved tremendously. When we were away and afterwards, I've been getting a really good quality sleep, not waking up for hours saying, 'I have to get up in an hour! I can't stay awake anymore!'
What was your experience with the staff and Dr. Eckel?
They are very dedicated to each individual and they take their time. They give you a lot of confidence in what they do. Dr. Eckel, Dr. Gregg, and everyone at the clinic are just my new family. It's not even just a doctor-patient relationship; they love having us there.
What is the community and coaching aspect like?
The twice-weekly coaching calls provide great support. You see other people who are in the same boat as you, and even though everyone is at a different place in their journey, you support each other. We are holding each other's hands metaphorically across the miles, which has helped keep me positive.
What would you say to someone considering this program?
I would say, 'Hop over that fence, honey, because that's where you wanna be.' It will give you peace of mind to know that you're doing something to further your wellness.
Frequently asked
Can I regain a normal active life with Parkinson's disease?
Yes, Carisa Stempert achieved what she calls a 'semblance of a normal life' after her treatment at bVital. She transitioned from being unable to go on vacation due to low energy to walking 25,000 steps in a day while traveling in London.
What happens if medication alone isn't enough for Parkinson's symptoms?
Carisa found that while carbidopa/levodopa helped her function, things were still 'not great or perfect.' She sought out bVital to advocate for herself and address the persistent fatigue and mobility issues that medication didn't fully resolve.
Is there community support during the bVital treatment process?
Carisa highlights the twice-weekly coaching calls and the supportive community of other patients 'fighting the fight.' She describes the clinic staff and fellow patients as a 'new family' that helps maintain a positive mindset.
