The interview

What was your health situation before finding the Kidney Institute?

My kidneys were failing. They wanted me to sign up for a kidney transplant. I was very run down. It was hard; we were all struggling. It was either that or go to kidney transplant, so I had to try something.

What was your initial impression of Dr. Bismah Irfan's diagnostic process?

She asked a whole lot of questions, and a lot of them I didn't have an answer for. She wanted more information than any other doctors ever asked. She's the first one to ever ask about the infections that I've had, looking for where they are coming from and why I am getting them.

How has your health changed since starting treatment?

My energy level is better than it's been for several years. My function has gone up and everything's going in the right direction. I'm starting to feel like there is a future other than dialysis and waiting on a transplant.

What specific health issues did Dr. Irfan identify that others missed?

Something that really amazed me was she's seen within my second blood test that my blood wasn't flowing the way it should. She's also working on the infections that no other doctor, even the ones that operated on my foot for the infections, ever asked about.

How does the personalized approach impact your mental well-being?

She's helping me with other mental things that she's turned me on to, a couple different things that have helped me out to release some of the past that is holding me back. I'm happier.

What is your opinion on the 'protocol' based care found in traditional medicine?

She's not gonna give you a protocol. And that's what you hear when you go to the doctor. If you push them, they'll tell you it's protocol. Everybody's different. Everybody responds differently to different things.

Frequently asked

Can I trust a holistic doctor if I'm skeptical of regular medicine?

Steven Langlois admitted he does not trust regular doctors but felt he had to trust someone because his only other option was a transplant. He found Dr. Irfan's approach different because she asked more questions than any previous doctor and looked at his specific case rather than following a generic protocol.

Is the cost of holistic kidney care worth it?

Steven noted that while patients have to decide if their health is worth the investment, the alternative of dialysis or a kidney transplant would result in significantly higher expenses in the long run.

How does Dr. Bismah Irfan's approach differ from conventional nephrology?

According to Steven, Dr. Irfan avoids standard 'protocols' that treat every patient the same. She investigated the source of his recurring infections and blood flow issues, which previous surgeons and specialists had overlooked.
