The interview

Who are you and what was your situation before working with Ken?

My name is Toku McCree. I live in Mexico City, and I am an executive coach. At that time, I was living in Salt Lake City with my partner. We'd been dating about two years, and we'd reached a real impasse in our relationship, so we had this real question of, are we gonna get married? I was at a really stuck place.

What was the specific internal conflict you were facing?

She felt very, very sure that I was the right person for her, but I had a lot of doubt, and then I was doubting my own doubt. I was feeling uncertain about my own uncertainty, and that made it so it was really hard for us to move forward.

How did Ken handle the dynamic between both partners?

You wanna feel like they can both listen to and advocate for both people, so both people leave the sessions feeling really listened to, really understood. Ken did a great job of enrolling her in the process of coaching and having her feel really confident that he wasn't just... even though I was the one that found him, she also felt like he was a great coach for us as well.

What was the most transformational part of the coaching process?

One of the things that Ken does really well is he's both great at listening as well as translating into the other person's language. Ken would be able to take those things and translate them, and almost, like, in an instant, we'd understand each other. Having Ken in our corner was like waving a magic wand.

How did the coaching affect you individually?

There was a way in which Ken would translate even what I was saying in a way that I would understand it better than I understood it before. I felt like I was able to understand my partner better in a new way and also understand myself better and how I felt in the relationship.

What was the final outcome of the coaching engagement?

I decided that I didn't wanna move forward with the relationship and that it was time for us to complete the relationship and close. Ken helped us navigate that process of separating. We lived together, and he helped us navigate that process really beautifully. I felt like we had a really beautiful process of ending of our relationship.

Looking back, how do you feel about the decision to end the relationship?

Now, a couple years after we broke up, my partner's actually married. She's very happy, and I could not be more happy for her. And then I'm actually in a really loving relationship here in Mexico City. Looking back on that decision now, seeing both where we are in our current relationships, I feel confident it's the right decision.

Frequently asked

Will my partner trust a coach that I recommended?

Toku McCree initially worried if his partner would trust Ken since Toku was the one who found him. However, Ken successfully enrolled her in the process, making her feel heard and confident that he was an advocate for both people.

Can a relationship coach help if we decide to break up?

Yes, Toku explains that Ken helped them navigate the difficult process of separating and moving out while living together. He describes the ending of the relationship as 'beautiful' and transformational for both parties.

How does Ken Blackman improve communication between partners?

Toku notes that Ken acts as a translator, taking what one person says and putting it into the other person's language. This allowed the couple to instantly understand each other in ways they couldn't on their own.

Ken can be this incredible guide and companion on that journey. So whether you decide to stay together, whether you decide to break up, that process is a process that is truly transformational. My name is Toku McCree. I live in Mexico City, and I am an executive coach. I work primarily with founders and, um, executives at different types of companies. At that time, I was living in Salt Lake City with my partner. We'd been dating about two years, and we'd reached a real impasse in our relationship, so we had this real question of, are we gonna get married? And so I was at a really stuck place. She felt very, very sure that I was the right person for her, but I had a lot of doubt, and then I was doubting my own doubt. I was feeling uncertain about my own uncertainty, and that made it so it was really hard for us to move forward. So, um, that's when we both decided it was time to reach out and get some support. I knew Ken from a lot of different places. I'd actually recommended him as a coach to a lot of people, and that's when we started working with him. You wanna feel like they can both listen to and advocate for both people, so both people leave the sessions feeling really listened to, really understood. I knew I would like Ken because I knew him personally, but would my partner like him, would my partner trust him? And Ken did a great job of enrolling her in the process of coaching and having her feel, um, really confident that he wasn't just... Even though I was the one that found him, she also felt like he was a great coach for us as well. One of the things that Ken does really well is he's both great at listening as well as translating into the other person's language. Ken would be able to take those things and translate them, and almost, like, in an instant, we'd understand each other. I mean, oftentimes, when you're in a relationship, you know, you're trying to communicate, but it just doesn't feel like you're meeting each other or able to be clear with one another, and it was... Having Ken in our corner was like waving a magic wand. Like, we instantly started understanding each other much better. And so, um, I think that was the thing that was most transformational about the process for each other. And then for me, as an individual participant, there was a way in which Ken would translate even what I was saying in, in a way that I would understand it better than I understood it before. So I felt like I was able to understand my partner better in a new way and also understand myself better and how I felt in the relationship. I was able to more fully accept my partner for who she was. I feel like she was more able to accept me for who I was, and that enabled us to make a really clear decision about what we wanted moving forward. I decided that I didn't wanna move forward with the relationship and that it was time for us to complete the relationship and close, and there was a lot of difficulty with that. Ken helped us navigate that process of separating. We lived together. Um, he helped us navigate that process really beautifully. I felt like we had a really beautiful process of ending of our relationship. And then, you know, now, a couple years after we broke up, my partner's actually married. She's very happy, and I could not be more happy for her. And then I'm actually in a really loving relationship here in Mexico City. So it was a very difficult decision for us to make. I feel like we did make it together as a couple, even though I kinda made the final call. But looking back on that decision now, seeing both where we are in, in our current relationships, it was, I feel confident, it's the right decision. I'm sure she would say the same. But, uh, it allowed us to navigate what I would say was a very difficult time and end up in a situation that was much better than I think either one of us could imagined, um. The thing that I always say is that no matter where your relationship is at or what is going on, Ken can help you understand yourself better, understand your partner better, and help you guys make that next step on your journey, whatever that next step might be.
