The interview
What is the main reason you would recommend working with Beth Byerly?
The main reason is the helpful support I felt I got at this point in my career. I would really have benefited from working with a coach like Beth some years ago. The skills she helped bring out in me were able to help me clarify the real issues, whether they were personal things impacting my work, barriers within myself, or thoughts and feelings regarding professional situations.
What tools did you gain from the coaching?
Now I have the tools to be able to pause in real time, to be able to manage those feelings, and to be able to move forward in positive ways when I'm around other people.
What was your professional background and mindset before starting?
I've been a nurse for years and I'm approaching the final years of my career. I have over 25 years in higher education in the health sciences and nursing education, with a doctoral degree and a couple of master's degrees. I needed clarity on how to proceed toward planning for retirement and what kind of legacy I wanted to leave.
How would you describe the experience of working with Beth?
In the initial phases when I was a little more hesitant, I began to work with her and the way she communicates is very encouraging and very accepting. I felt I could be myself, which is sometimes hard for me in the professional space where I usually have guards up.
What surprised you most about the coaching process?
What surprised me most was the applicability to my personal life, my personal relationships, and relationships with my coworkers. Even the way to view the larger institution where I work and its impact on me—having a way of framing how it affects me and how it doesn't affect me was surprising and satisfying.
What changes have you observed in your team's collaboration?
We reflect briefly before engaging in responses or opinions. In a dynamic team like health sciences, communication and collaborating can be a challenge, but I now feel a sense of more respect and seeing each other for what we're bringing to the table.
