Josh Hall used Geobear to resolve structural cracks and damp issues at his property in Tottenham. While traditional underpinning would have taken weeks and cost tens of thousands of pounds, Geobear completed the work in just over half a day. Hall highlighted the non-disruptive nature of the geopolymer technology compared to traditional excavation.

At a glance

Primary Use Case
Repairing internal and external structural cracks and damp issues caused by subsidence.
Reported Result
Stabilized property and resolved cracks in half a day versus 2-3 weeks for underpinning.
Time to Value
Work completed in just over half a day; consultation within two weeks of contact.
The guys were there half a day, I think—maybe just over that. And that sorted. Well, compared to two or three weeks. I'll take that every time.
Most of the quotes [for underpinning] were tens of thousands of pounds. Didn't really have that at the time or would have had to take out loans and stuff like that.
It's obviously quite an advanced technology, developed technology, professional company.

The interview

What were the main issues you were experiencing with your property?

The main issue I had was cracks started appearing on the inside of the building and the outside brickwork. You could see all the pointing and the brickwork was just slightly coming away. I noticed that the drive was at a higher level than it should have been and there's a lot of water getting into the building, a lot of problems with damp.

What options were you considering before choosing Geobear?

My options were, really, do I get underpinning carried out? People—trades coming in and out, digging underneath the building, forming concrete form work. It could take weeks, cost thousands of pounds and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I had a couple of people lined up for underpinning and most of the quotes were tens of thousands of pounds.

How was the initial consultation and planning process?

When I spoke to the gent, it was within a couple of weeks of me contacting him. He asked if I could walk around with a camera around the property and show him the cracks and all the rest of it. It was just very good, very thorough. It's just sort of like drawing up a bit of a plan as you're speaking. I'd never really seen that done before.

Were you able to be involved in the preparation for the work?

I agreed with the gentleman on the call that I would actually take on some of the work myself. Because he understood that I'm practical—I've got my own excavator, mini digger—I was able to peel off the driveway and expose the services. To actually have that option was great.

How long did the actual repair work take to complete?

The guys were there half a day, I think—maybe just over that. And that sorted it. Well, compared to two or three weeks for underpinning, I'll take that every time.

Why do you think more people haven't heard of this technology in the UK?

I think here in the UK it's a lot of old-fashioned techniques we use when it comes to building work. As soon as you mention 'underpinning' in the UK everybody just runs a mile because people don't want to know. They don't want to do it and a lot of builders don't really want to go in there.

Frequently asked

Is Geobear faster than traditional underpinning for subsidence?

Yes. Josh Hall noted that while traditional underpinning could take two to three weeks, the Geobear team completed his repair in just over half a day.

How much does Geobear cost compared to traditional foundation repair?

Josh Hall reported that traditional underpinning quotes were in the tens of thousands of pounds, requiring potential loans. Geobear provided a more accessible solution that avoided the high cost and hassle of major excavation.

What is the consultation process like for Geobear?

Josh Hall described a very thorough and quick digital consultation where he walked around the property with a camera to show cracks, allowing the representative to draw up a plan during the call.

All around the area people having these sort of problems. Some people don't even know it. so, I've been telling them. Obviously a lot of people - given the cost and the hassle, insurance implications, all the rest of it - probably don't really want to investigate it too much. I said, "well, this is a simple solution." I mean, the guys were there half a day, I think - maybe just over that. And that sorted. Well, compared to two or three weeks. I'll take that every time So my name's Josh Hall and I live in Tottenham, which is southern England. So, the main issue I had was cracks started appearing on the inside of the building and the outside brickwork. You could see all the pointing and the brickwork was just slightly coming away. I noticed that the drive - where we parked the vehicles outside and it was at a higher level than it should have been and there's a lot of water getting into the building. A lot of problems with damp. So, I just sort of put two and two together that maybe there was a bit of an issue with the outside walls. A lot of buildings in our area have had subsidence in the past and have had to have corrective work like underpinning, if you're familiar with that. So, my options were, really, do I get that sort of work carried out? People - trades coming in and out, coming and going, digging underneath the building, forming concrete - sort of concrete form work. Could take weeks, cost thousands of pounds and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When I spoke to the gent, It was within - certainly, within a couple of weeks of me contacted him, so just want to, sort of, touch base. If you could walk around with a camera around the property and show me the cracks and all the rest of it and it's just very good, very thorough. You know, you could - it's just sort of like drawing up a bit of a plan as you're speaking. I never really seen that done before because obviously people carry out work here. They always want to come along and a lot of time it can involve loads of trades, so you literally open the door every night to someone different and it can just drag out. So, very quick consultation side of it. Then he said "we'll get you booked in." And I spent a lot of time, sort of, deciding what I wanted to do because I had a couple of people lined up to do the underpinning, Most of the quotes were tens of thousands of pounds. Didn't really have that at the time or would have had to take out loans and stuff like that. So, that was a hassle. And to be honest with you a lot of them got a bit of a bad vibe. They probably wouldn't be terribly reliable. I agreed with the gentleman on the call that I would actually take on some of the work myself. Good thing is because he understood that I'm practical - I've got my own excavator, mini digger because I do a bit of work here and there. I was able to peel off the driveway, if you like. Expose the services. To actually have that option was great, to be honest with you. Because I thought 'well I can... I can dig a hole.' And it's... it's obviously quite an advanced technology developed technology professional company. I think a lot of people who saw the van they didn't even know what it is. I've spoken to so many people, you know, in the building trade and all the rest of it and I said, "I've had this Geobear work carried out." I think here in the UK it's a lot of old-fashioned techniques, perhaps, we use when it comes to building work and perhaps that's... that was the why people haven't heard of it. As soon as you mention "underpinning" in UK everybody just runs a mile because people don't want to know. They don't want to do it. a lot of builders don't really want to go in there. You won't find a man on his own who wants to tackle it. I certainly recommended it.
