The interview
Who are you and what was your role in the estate process?
My name is Jennifer Nichols. I live in McLean, Virginia, and I am happily retired. My brother and I are the executors of my parents' estate, and we are the fifth and sixth of six kids.
Why did you start looking for a tool like FairSplit?
As we were discussing on how best to distribute the assets in my parents' estate after their passing, it was clear to us that we needed a tool to help us get the assets to the family efficiently and without conflict. The family members live from California to Washington, DC, and we just knew that this might be logistically hard for everyone to come to the family house and to divide the property.
Did you have any previous experiences that influenced your decision?
My husband's family had already gone through this, and it was a very tedious process, and it was a little bit of conflict involved. In my research on trying to find a tool to help us with this, I came across FairSplit online, and it just looked like an amazing tool to help us through this process.
What was the initial experience of setting up the inventory like?
After getting started with FairSplit, we realized that there was a task ahead of us, which was getting all the assets photographed and described. But as we got into it, it ended up being a very fun process for the local family to go through all the memories in the house and to write a little description about them.
How did the software impact the family dynamic during the division?
It was not only administratively a great tool, it ended up being a very bonding experience for all of our family. My brother and I were relieved of this responsibility of being in the middle of dividing the family treasures. It just created a sense of peace, really, for both of us that we got out of the middle of that process.
Were there any unexpected benefits to using the platform?
We were able to give our kids access to the website, so they could look as well to see if there were things that they wanted. So it became a very multigenerational process that I was not expecting.
What would you say was the best part of using FairSplit?
I would say the best part of using the program was the memories and the legacy of our family's heritage that was able to be preserved through the pictures and the website and being able to divide these fairly and equitably among the family.
Frequently asked
Is the process of photographing and describing every estate asset too difficult?
Jennifer Nichols noted that while they initially realized there was a significant task ahead, it ended up being a fun and worthwhile process for the local family to go through memories and write descriptions.
Can FairSplit help families who live in different states?
Yes, Jennifer used it specifically because her family members lived from California to Washington, DC, making it logistically hard for everyone to meet at the family house in person.
How does FairSplit help executors manage their responsibilities?
According to Jennifer, the tool relieved her and her brother of the burden of being 'in the middle' of dividing treasures, creating a sense of peace for the executors.
